If you’re considering spine surgery but are concerned about recovery time, minimally invasive spine surgery could be a great option. This technique uses specialized tools inserted through small incisions, allowing the surgeon to access and treat the spinal column, vertebrae, discs, nerve roots and surrounding structures. Because it requires smaller incisions, minimally invasive surgery typically results in less pain, a faster recovery, and a quicker return to your daily activities.

If you're interested in learning more about this option, we can discuss the benefits for your unique situation. Contact us to learn more about this advanced treatment.

Many people wonder what causes an aneurysm, what warning signs to look out for, and when to seek medical attention. A brain aneurysm, or cerebral aneurysm, occurs when a weakened area in a brain artery expands or bulges, filling with blood. This swelling can press on nearby nerves or brain tissue and, in some cases, may rupture, leading to bleeding in the surrounding area—known as a hemorrhage. A ruptured aneurysm is a medical emergency that can result in serious complications.

However, not all brain aneurysms cause symptoms or lead to rupture. Some are found accidentally during imaging tests for other health concerns. If an unruptured aneurysm grows or presses on nearby structures, it may cause:

💥 Headaches
👀 Blurred or double vision
😣 Pain above or behind one eye
👁️ Dilated pupils
🫥 Numbness or weakness on one side of the face

A ruptured brain aneurysm is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention. Signs of rupture include:

💥 A sudden, severe headache (often described as the "worst headache of your life")
🤢 Nausea or vomiting
🦴 Stiff neck
💡 Sensitivity to light
👀 Blurred or double vision
⚡ Seizures
🧠 Confusion or difficulty speaking
😵 Loss of consciousness

If you or someone else experiences symptoms of a ruptured aneurysm, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Common risk factors for aneurysms include high blood pressure, smoking, family history, and certain medical conditions that affect blood vessels.

At Long Island Brain & Spine, we provide expert care for patients with cerebrovascular conditions, offering in-depth evaluations and guidance from experienced neurosurgeons.

Brain tumors aren't always cancerous, but they can affect your brain and overall health.

Spotting a brain tumor early can make a big difference in treatment options and overall health. Since tumors can affect things like movement, vision, speech, and memory, catching them sooner rather than later helps prevent serious complications. More treatment options and possibly less invasive options, such as targeted surgery or radiation before the tumor has a chance to grow, may be possible with early detection. It also may increase the chances of successful treatment and a better quality of life. Plus, getting checked early can help manage symptoms like headaches, vision problems, and nausea before they get worse. In some cases, tumors can press on critical areas of the brain, so early intervention can help prevent permanent damage.

The team at Long Island Brain & Spine is here to help with expert evaluation and personalized care—so you can get the answers you need.

❤ February is American Heart Month, an opportunity to focus on the importance of heart health and its connection to your brain and spinal health.

Heart disease can have a significant impact on your overall well-being, and conditions like high blood pressure, strokes, and aneurysms can directly affect the health of your brain and spine. While the heart itself doesn't directly interact with the spine, cardiovascular health plays a significant role in overall circulation and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to various parts of the body, including the spine.

Keep your heart healthy, and in turn, you’ll be supporting the health of your brain and spine as well.

Signs to watch for:

• Slow or no growth in the baby’s head

Early diagnosis is important in managing craniosynostosis effectively.
