Tissue expanders are a temporary implant device that are used to stretch the skin. While tissue expanders have a variety of uses, today let’s focus on tissue expansion after mastectomy.

At the time of mastectomy, a tissue expanders is placed in the breast to maintain and continued to create a pocket for eventual placement of a breast implant or even leading up to some forms of staged natural tissue breast reconstruction.

Tissue expanders are filled with saline (water), usually on a weekly basis, until adequate expansion is achieved.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 💗

The goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to promote screening, prevention, and awareness to breast cancer and the breast cancer community. It is also a time to shine a light on Breast Reconstruction and what a patient’s options are after undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Here is a brief overview of reconstructive approaches after mastectomy.

We’re back for a !! This patient presented to our office after MOHs surgery for removal of a basal cell cancer from his upper lip. He presented with a 1.5 cm x 2 cm defect (seen on second slide). We were able to rearrange the nearby tissues using a rotation advancement flap to close the defect. 4 months later, it’s hard to tell he ever had a procedure done! 👏🏼

The theme of this week seemed to be “Arm Lift” consults!

Arm Lift or “Brachioplasty” is a procedure to contour the arms. We are seeing this procedure become more popular again as patients are having continued success with weight loss either on their own, with GLP-1s like ozempic/zepbound/mounjaro, or with bariatric surgery.

Post-partum changes to the abdomen brought this patient to our office seeking options to correct skin overhanging her c-section scar and smoother contour more in line with her athletic lifestyle.

Abdominoplasty or “Tummt Tuck” was performed with contouring liposuction to the flanks to improve torso contour.

1 year post-op and she is looking and feeling excellent! This patient also lost 30lbs after surgery, which only enhanced her result ☺️

Women seeking Breast Reduction often complain of heaviness even with wearing a bra and shoulder grooving from the weight of the breasts pulling on bra straps. Just 1 week post-op and this patient’s shoulder grooving was resolved! This is just one of the reasons breast reduction is such a popular and predictably positive procedure 👏🏼🙌🏼
