6 weeks in, 4 sessions together, and what a difference!!!! STUNNING 😍

We are never too far gone. These feet came in desperate to solve knee pain and giving out/catching after replacement surgery 5 months ago. There was also chronic sciatica that wasn’t being helped with PT, daily yoga, or exercise.

She learned, like so many, that stretching isn’t always the answer, and movement done right, can make a world of difference. So often there is a strength discrepancy somewhere along the chain that is inhibiting natural movement. For this persistence warrior, it was weak feet and hips. Because of this, her knees were taking over a lot of the rotational function that hips and feet are supposed to do, keeping the knee angry and in protective mode. Once we organized her nervous system around ACTIVATING the hips and feet, and proper alignment could be achieved, not only did the knee giving out resolve, but look at the transformation in her feet where she had previously had bunion surgery. Another delightful side effect of knowing what needs strengthening vs stretching and the right tools for the job.

Another eureka moment to share!

This foot owner came in complaining of extreme calf pain in which no amount of stretching seemed to relieve..his entire life!!! He also LOVES his Vans! So, naturally science had to sum up the problem.

While I typically like that Vans are flat, which is why skaters like them too BECAUSE THEY HAVE MORE FOOT CONTROL thus BETTER BALANCE, they are often too narrow for the metatarsal heads, aka, the toe box. As you can see here his very wide feet simply do not fit in this shoes. This foot, and leg, is extremely unhappy because it doesn’t have room to move, which leads to poor calf mechanics and atrophy within the brain foot connection. This is why, as we age, our balance decreases because our super SUPPORTIVE shoes turn off the mechanoreceptors in our feet creating a perfect environment for falls.

Instead, what we need is to be closer to the earth and more sensitivity in our foot feedback. We need to train the foot to do its many jobs of supporting the entire body and giving the brain information about our position. The foot simply cannot do that when it’s stuffed into a tight shoe.

Free your feet and let the happy back into your life!

Let’s talk about ADAPTOGENS!!!!
🤗🌟😍

Adaptogens are plant based extracts that help the body adapt to stress. They are used to aid in managing an overactive sympathetic nervous system, known as the fight or flight response. These herbs are considered bioregulators that increase the adaptive capacity in our autonomic nervous system so we can avoid depletion and damage from stress. Essentially, adaptogens create resilience and natural balance, called homeostasis, in our body’s ability to regulate.

There are natural plant based and synthetic adaptogens. Many studies show plant based adaptogens have benefits in managing chronic fatigue, cognitive impairment, immune protection, and regulate oxygen consumption under physical strain. The benefits of adaptogens in maintaining metabolic function are worth considering.

Ashwagandha is my preferred choice of adaptogens. I use it personally and professionally because of its ability to regulate energy throughout the day, support adrenal function, and promote restful sleep. It is also known best for its phytoconstituents.

Ashwagandha is my favorite body oil in my massage practice because of its ability to restore and rejuvenate post-workout. I love to use it personally in my home cupping sessions! So it’s a great choice for not only the active lifestyle, but also for young and old alike.

New insoles for the New Year! Rest and recovery starts with HAPPY FEET!

Some of you know I’ve taken up distance trail running these past years. I find the nature my favorite self care ritual. Nothing beats running around in the woods letting my wild out. But my feet can begrudge my lifestyle, standing all day in push/pull lunges, dancing, running, and all the in between.

One of my keys to success is honoring my feet. They are probably the most sensitive part of my body. And my high arches mean I have to work really hard at increasing flexibility and maintaining proper alignment. These insoles help me by stimulating proprioception, which helps with balance and awareness, increasing blood flow, the natural healing juice of life, and massages my feet as a walk. Truly these insoles are everything for my work and play.

What are ways that you create intentional recovery in your day to day?

None of us enjoys injury! While there is pain to be managed, often the greatest struggle is with slowing down or the feelings of inadequacy and disappointmnet. This is the grieving process asking us to be present. Injury is as natural as breathing. But resisting this process only extends the life of the injury.

The truth is, slowing down, leaning into the feels, is the fastest way to recovery. Instead of reaching for all the ways we numb discomfort and ignore our feelings, talking our way out of our needs, try to embrace the grieving process. Let go of your routines and accept the change. It might be just the thing your training was missing.

Slow and steady wins the race!

Don’t trade off the benefits of standing vs sitting by sagging into your joints instead of engaging your muscles. The whole point in getting out of the chair is to create better alignment, better circulation, and better breathing because we are stacked over our hips.

BUT, if you don’t make the switch to use your muscles, you are training your body to stay lazy and lax, for hours a day, and missing all the good benefits.

Let’s get to work, and by that I mean make your 💪MUSCLES do their job, and learn to stand with integrity.

Not sure what that means or feels like?! Hit me up!

Props can make all the difference!

There’s so much empowerment in knowing how to properly support your individual needs. A big part of what we do together in our therapy is getting curious and really specific about how to work through limitations. If we aren’t clear about what our body needs, it’s hard to make progress in restricted joints. But if we can find the right support, and learn how to progress toward joint freedom, the limitations can melt away.

Check out this great example. It wasn’t possible for him to sit on his heels without extreme pain and discomfort. So why would we want to keep trying then? Because, what we don’t use, we lose. And now look! He has Hero down.

Hero Pose is excellent for stretching (feet, ankles, knees, and quads), strengthening (arches of the feet and spine), and lengthening (spine and proper positioning for 360 diaphragmatic breathing). BUT, many of us do not have the joint flexibility and need to modify. It’s often the ego that gets in the way, telling us we can’t, it’s too hard, or too painful, so we don’t. We then concede. And the spiral of limiting beliefs, and limited joints, becomes our story.

If we can learn to trust in our ability to progress and re-pattern, we can do a lot of things we thought were out of reach.

Self-care 101:
When the healer needs healing ❤️‍🩹 a few needles, some cupping, and excellent tuina should do the trick.

I used to wait till I was nearly broken before I’d slow down. I figured I’d “treat” myself when it was a good time. I quickly learned though that prevention far outweighs in benefits what I got from frantically trying to find a therapist once I was already sick or injured. Learn from my mistake and stop when you need to stop. At the very least, slow down. I had to learn to put myself first if I wanted to be productive helping others in their healing. Everyone’s better off when you’re better off. We can’t take care of others if we can’t take care of ourself.
