👁️✨ Your eye color can do more than define your look — it can influence how your eyes handle light!

🩵 Lighter eyes (blue, gray, green) have less pigment and are more sensitive to sunlight and glare, but may also see a bit better in dim light since they let more light in.

🤎 Darker eyes (brown, hazel) have built-in pigment protection that helps filter light and UV rays — though sunglasses are still a must for long-term eye health.

Whatever your eye color, protect your sight from UV damage to lower your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

✨ See clearly and comfortably all year long.

Earlier this month, we shared how macular degeneration can affect central vision — but what does that actually look like?

One of the early signs of AMD is distortion — straight lines may appear wavy, blurred, or even missing in your central vision.

An Amsler grid is a simple tool that can help detect subtle changes early. To use it:

• Hold the image about 12 inches from your face
• Wear your reading glasses if you normally use them
• Cover one eye at a time
• Focus on the center dot
• Notice if any lines appear wavy, distorted, blurred, or missing

If you notice changes in your vision, it’s important to schedule a comprehensive eye exam. Early detection and proper management can help protect your sight.

Our team at Westlake Eye Specialists is here to help you stay ahead of vision changes.

What you can’t see matters.

February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, bringing attention to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its impact on central vision.

AMD can affect how clearly you see faces, text, and fine details — often without obvious early warning signs. Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential for detecting changes early and protecting long-term vision.

At every stage of life, proactive eye care plays a key role in preserving the quality of your vision.

If you haven’t had an eye exam recently, this is a great reminder to schedule one.

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can progress with little to no early symptoms.
That’s why Dr. Zarmeena Vendal, MD (Harvard fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist at Westlake Eye Specialists) recently wrote about “Closing the Gap Between Glaucoma Diagnosis and Intervention”—helping patients move from “we’ll monitor it” to a clear, proactive plan to protect long-term vision.

At our Austin practice, that approach means:

✅ Thorough glaucoma evaluation (not just an eye pressure check)
✅ Patient-first education so you understand what’s happening
✅ Modern options when appropriate, including SLT laser, DSLT laser and minimally invasive glaucoma procedures (MIGS)
If you’ve been told you’re a glaucoma suspect, have high eye pressure, or have a family history of glaucoma, don’t wait for symptoms—schedule an evaluation.

They call glaucoma the “silent thief of sight” for a reason. 👁️

Glaucoma often develops without pain or early warning signs, quietly damaging the optic nerve over time. Many patients don’t realize there’s a problem until vision loss has already occurred.

The good news? Early detection can make a meaningful difference.

A comprehensive dilated eye exam is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your vision. If it’s been more than a year since your last exam, January is a great time to schedule.
