"Covid is now the No. 3 cause of death in the US ― ahead of accidents, injuries, lung disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and many, many other causes," Frieden said.

Using information collected as of August 10, the CDC predicted that 180,000 to 200,000 people in the United States will die by September 5 because of the coronavirus.

But the IHME forecast is based on 50% of Americans wearing face masks. If 95% wore masks, the number of deaths could be cut by 66,000, the IHME said.

“Teens and young adults need to know that if you use e-ci******es, you are likely at immediate risk of COVID-19 because you are damaging your lungs,” said the study’s senior author, Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, professor of pediatrics.

“Young people may believe their age protects them from contracting the virus or that they will not experience symptoms of COVID-19, but the data show this isn’t true among those who v**e,” said the study’s lead author, postdoctoral scholar Shivani Mathur Gaiha, PhD.

“This study tells us pretty clearly that youth who are using v**es or are dual-using [e-ci******es and ci******es] are at elevated risk, and it’s not just a small increase in risk; it’s a big one,” Gaiha said.

Data collected in May shows that teenagers and young adults who v**e face a much higher risk of COVID-19 than their peers who do not v**e, Stanford researchers found.
