What is cervical dilation? The majority of the time the cervix is a small, tightly closed hole which is located where the uterus attaches to the top of the va**na. The cervix holds your baby safely inside and prevents anything from getting inside of the uterus. During labor, contractions use pressure to make the cervix soften, thin (effacement) and open up slowly until it expands sufficiently and allow your baby to be born.
