Welcome to 2026.
The Church Brew Works opened in 1996 as the first brewery in a closed Church in North America. Since that time about 40 more closed churches have been adapted for brewpubs and tap rooms.
This is an original photo used on the back cover of brewpub magazine.
CBW designed the tanks to have copper banding at top and in the middle of the tanks and a reverse stainless steel banding on our copper clad brew kettles. This innovative look swept tank design and became a design feature on other showcase breweries for years to come.
The photo was taken by Priscilla Briggs who was a talented young teacher at Manchester craftsmen guild and a friend of the founders of CBW. People would ask what software did you use to make this photo look that way? Our answer was huh...that is the real photo.
The tank mfg was specific mchanical systems out of Victoria Island British Columbia. They made stainless tanks for the fishing industry in the pacific Northwest for fishing vessels and started to make beer tanks.
We worked closely with Blaine Clouston and Ray Freeman to customize this brewhouse and worked with Aaron Fedarko at Allegheny Ludlum Steel to use Pittsburgh rolled steel.
30 Years ago our country produced 42" wide stainless so the banding on our tanks was used to cover up the welds in the mfg process.
CBW asked Specific to split the costs of our photo to for use of this add. They were a bit nervous but said yes. When we asked for $150 which was half of the $300 costs, they were baffled and confused how low the price of the photo was. Lots of friends helped in the begining on low budgets to help the project get up including Jessi and Monte, J Lesko, Pumper Katz, the fulton family, architect off record Mike Maise who was part time bartender on Tory hill and later was the lead designer of the first Apple Store, Cris Fulton, Uncle Dave Casey who refinished all the wood flors and other friends and family. We opened the pub for Burghers and not tourists...(as the city had nominal tourism 30 years ago). We still strive to serve Burghers first but have had visistors from around the world. We open at 2pm today..
We hope to see more of you in 2026

Cheers - Sean Casey Founder CBW

Help Keep Con Alma's Doors Open

Con Alma was born from a vision to give Pittsburgh’s jazz scene a true home—a place where music, food, and community come together in a way that’s both immersive and unique. We set out to create an environment unlike any other in the city, with vinyl records spinning, no TV screens to distract from the vibe, and a focus on high-level food and cocktails. Since opening our doors in June 2019, we’ve poured our hearts into making Con Alma a cultural hub for jazz lovers and the restaurant community alike.

But just as we were finding our rhythm, COVID-19 hit in March 2020, forcing us into survival mode. We fought to keep the music alive and our team together, even as the world changed around us. In 2021, we took a leap and opened a second location downtown, hoping to expand our reach. Unfortunately, keeping both locations open for too long stretched us thin, and the financial strain began to take its toll. Even after closing our Shadyside location, the debts and challenges kept piling up. In this industry, one slow week can threaten everything, and one slow month can be devastating. Despite outward appearances, we’ve been fighting to stay above water, and the threat of closing our doors has never felt more real.

We’ve tried to raise funds before, but unexpected setbacks stopped us short. Now, after years of hard work and dedication, we’re turning to you—our community—for help. The funds we raise will go directly toward paying back taxes, settling debts, securing payroll, and covering the countless expenses that keep Con Alma running. This funding will allow us to achieve more stability for the first time in years, and we will then be able to continue to develop Con Alma’s authentic vision.

We believe in what Con Alma stands for and the space it holds in Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape. We are deeply grateful for the support we’ve received so far, and we humbly ask for your help to keep the music playing and the doors open.
