Mandeville, Richard C. passed away at the age of 79, on Thursday, April 21, 2022. Born to Graham and Evelyn Mandeville (nee Wolfer) in Washington Heights, New York, “Rich”, “Richard” or “Richie”, attended Mt. Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx, NY. His family grew, adding sisters Linda and Denise, and his brother Robert and in 1957 his family moved to NJ. Rich stayed with his cousins to finish out his current school year and in 1958, Rich joined the rest of the Mandeville clan in Washington Twp. NJ, graduating from Westwood High School in 1960. Rich entered the National Guard in 1961, serving in 1st Platoon, D Company 104th Armored Engineer Battalion. Rich then attended IBEW Local 3 Apprenticeship School and became an electrician, following in the footsteps of his father Graham, and his Uncle Vince. One of Rich’s first jobs was at the 1964 World’s Fair, installing the lighting on Michelangelo’s Pieta at the Vatican Pavilion. Rich continued working for various shops such as Kleinknecht, Adco, and IPC and was a dedicated IBEW, Local Union 3 Member. Rich worked all over the Burroughs of New York; If you took a cab, anywhere in the city, and pointed to a building, he could tell you if he worked there. To this day, he still used the tape measure that he laid out the Juliard School of Music with. In 1962 he courted, and later married Claire Mandeville (nee Wolpmann) in 1967, moving into a garden apartment in Montvale, NJ. In 1971 Richard, and Claire welcomed their son Christopher to the family and moved into a small single-level ranch in West Milford, NJ. The Mandevilles lived in this house, on Kitchell Lake for the remaining 51 years of Richard’s life. Settled in West Milford, Rich spent his time commuting to New York from NJ, and endearing himself to the future friends and neighbors in the Kitchell Lake Community. As a neighbor across the street often said, “The party doesn’t start, till Mr. Mandeville, gets here!” After a 2nd story addition was added to the one-level ranch, in 1975 Rich’s second son, Keith was born. He was a redhead, but they loved him anyway. Firmly entrenched in northern NJ life, in 1979, Rich devoted himself to the Local PAL Soccer program. After coaching both his sons through their first years of soccer, he remained a coach for 26 seasons while holding the positions of Chairman of Soccer and Vice President within the PAL organization. During his time as a coach and board member the soccer program grew from 200-800 children. Having never played soccer, Rich bought every book, every VHS tape, attended every seminar and mined every source he could to continuously improve his knowledge of the game and his coaching skills. Many of his players went on to win local town, county, invitational tournaments and high school conference titles after being under his tutelage. In 2006, Rich retired from his Local 3 Electrical Work, but ended up busier in retirement, continuing to be an active member of the Kitchell Lake Association: heading it’s Beach Committee, Road Committee, and also served as President of the association. He continued to attend Local 3 retiree events and was involved with the Delaware ski-club. In 2009 he welcomed his twin granddaughters, Sabrina and Jessica into his life, and they have been a focus of Pop-Pops ever since. Rich was a great husband, dad, work partner, and friend. Volunteering his time where he could and always setting the best example for those who came after him. If you worked with him, you would never stop laughing, but his workmanship, craftsmanship, and attention to detail were beyond reproach. If you were a friend of his, you could always count on catching up with him on an almost weekly basis, remembering crazy adventures, and constantly creating new ones. As a neighbor he was always helping, open, welcoming, dependable, and entertaining as hell! As a coach, he was encouraging, analytical, and always set the bar high for hard work and dedication. As a Dad, he was fair, funny, thoughtful, proud and worked hard to raise two loving and dedicated men. As a husband he was devoted, surprisingly sentimental, reliable, and never stopped off for a “drink” after work. What I can say about my Father, is that the lives of the people he touched have been forever changed. In whatever capacity you knew him, he was the best measure of a man he could be in that moment. Whether it was with a joke, or hard work, or his vast amount of knowledge on any subject in particular, I hope that all the lives he touched continue to keep their memories of their connection with him close in their hearts. His matter will be returned to the earth, his energy returned to the universe, his spirit is with his God, and the memories he created with us are ours. Richard Carlyle Mandeville is predeceased by his parents Evelyn Mandeville (nee Wolfer) and Graham Mandeville, his brother Robert Mandeville and his sister Denise Mandeville.
