I’ve been thinking a lot about just how many herbs there are to get to know. I’ve always believed that herbalism is, at its core, about relationship. I graduated from herb school in 2006 with hundreds of plants swirling around in my head. It has taken years to develop the true, authentic relationships I have now with my dearest plants. In this era of quick fixes, and instant gratification, this is not a popular notion.

But it’s true..

This Summer, I will be hosting free standing, individual classes on 1 Plant at a time. Come to one class, or come to all. Pay for each class separately. We will learn legends and lore, meet the plant in person, discuss how to grow it, its healing attributes, and how to best craft remedies from it. You will go home with a carefully prepared remedy for your home apothecary.

First up, Lemon Balm

There are 3 new programs launching Yarrow School of Herbalism in West Milford, NJ. I will describe each one over the next couple of days.

First up: THE 2026 SUMMER HERBALISM INTENSIVE

Running May-Sept, Meeting 1 weekend day per month from 10-2, DATES BY PARTICIPANT CONSENSUS

🌱We will move through the growing season together, meeting a wide variety of plants LIVE AND IN PERSON on a suburban, organic homestead.

🌱We will learn the materia medica (properties, indications, and uses) of 40+ herbs, covering key herbalism concepts along the way.

🌱 Students will make flash cards for each plant after meeting it in person. In this way, individual studies may be continued after classes end. Flash cards will also serve as a reference for using the plants appropriately, and can be added to over time.

🌱Students will also be given writing prompts on important concepts in herbalism and ecology. These will be part of the monthly curriculum.

🌱Latin (binomial) name quizzes at June-Sept sessions. Latin names are important for identifying plants properly.

🌱 We will craft syrups, shrubs, tinctures, and salves!

🌺Enrolled students will also have the option to attend 2 additional public classes ((June/July) FREE OF CHARGE.

Foraging is hip, I know. But I will remind everyone that NJ, as a whole, is an ecosystem under duress. Ramps are threatened. Garlic mustard and mugwort are not. It is important to know your plants.

This is an early gift of warmth. Although these temperatures won’t last, it’s still a taste of things to come. It’s hard to believe we could still have frost for almost 2 months here- and we’ve had frost as late as May 15..

We took our Winter row covers off the garden on Sunday. We planted some Fall things that needed to over-Winter for a Spring crop- a conical German cabbage, Purple Flowering broccoli that must endure very cold temperatures to produce, Red Russian kale. We have parsley and cilantro that survived and are looking perky. This time of year initiates the promise of home grown food. I feel invigorated.

I recently finished a book written in 2014 called, “In Winter’s Kitchen.” It was a delight. I decided to go back and listen to “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle,” published in 2007. There were lots of good food books written around this time. “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” is next (2006). These books came out as excitement over America’s growing food movement was burgeoning. I got into natural foods in the 80’s. This was a whole other ball game (artisanal, local, non-GMO, farmers markets). I am drawn back into the excitement I began feeling in the early 2000s!

Anyway, I am so into FOOD currently- perusing seed catalogues, looking at our inventory of saved seeds, garden planning, thinking already about fermenting, freezing, canning, COOKING. I love herbs, and I really love food.

What are you excited about as Spring approaches?

New Class Offering

Choosing Nutrient-Dense Foods and Botanicals as a Sustainable Approach to Better Health

Saturday, March 7, 2026
10am-3pm
West Milford

Feeding ourselves health-promoting foods in this culture can be a radical act. As women, how do we feed ourselves with joy, purpose, and intention? What can we take from social media wellness culture, and what is in our best interest to leave behind? What does it mean to be truly “nourished” as women? How can we expect to give to others with a depleted spirit, or empty cup? Does it make sense to start expensive protocols, fasts, or detoxes without first going straight to the source- the very foods and botanicals we can use daily to enrich and rebuild our health?

I went into my first health food store as a child in the 1970’s. I became a natural foodie at 15 in 1986. I’ve been pursuing a natural lifestyle, cooking healthy meals, and trying every diet (at one time or another) for 30+ years. I am interested in the universal pearls of wisdom, and simple practices that we can all incorporate. You will not find dogma here, only support.

*This class also weaves in my decades long studies of spirituality and personal growth. Making the choice to care for ourselves- by feeding ourselves intentionally, mindfully, and healthfully, is a radical path of self-love and self-acceptance. We all deserve that, and our positive choices ripple outward.

*This class will be fun. We always have a good time, and laugh a lot. One thing that also always strikes me is the community that is built❤️

*This class will discuss in-depth what nutrient density is, and which foods and herbs fit this bill. We will explore our “why” for beginning to care for ourselves with the attention and grace with which we care for others. We will map out easy ways to make choosing nutrient-dense foods a part of our lives.

We’ll sample teas, syrups, and electuaries designed to bring energy and nutrition into our lives.

**We will make a syrup, a tea, and an electuary to take home. Crafting remedies in community is always special❤️

I’m not quite sure why I don’t post here more. My personal page feels like home. I’d like to change that.
