So, let’s talk CREMATION.
Did you know????

1. Can I sign for my own cremation?
Yes, you can, all you need is to sign and notarize a self declaration form and the crematory authorization form.

2. I/they have a will, what happens at death?
If a legal will is in place, it trumps current decision, If your loved one has left instructions on the final disposition of their body, legally, we must go by the will.

3. If my loved one has passed away, who signs the cremation authorization form?
In Louisiana, a cremation authorization form is signed by the legal next of kin. If there is a surviving spouse, they have the sole authority to sign. If there is no surviving spouse, then a majority of the surviving adult children have the authority to sign the form.

4. Can I scatter/bury cremains anywhere? Yes, however it is best to get permission from the property owner/cemetery to scatter/bury. (Some cemeteries do charge to bury). You do not need a funeral director present as the final disposition is the crematory.

A funeral serves not just as a final goodbye, but as an opportunity for friends, family, and community members to connect, share memories, and strengthen bonds during a time of mutual vulnerability. It's a crucial step in the communal journey of healing, reminding us all of the impact one life can have on many.

There are many wonderful ways to honor and remember your loved one. Some families choose to host a celebration of life instead of a funeral. Others have a funeral, then hold a celebration of life weeks, months or years afterward to continue honoring their loved one, or to include others who weren’t able to attend a previous ceremony.

Remember to honor your loved one and cherish the memories.

Memorial Service vs. Celebration of Life

A celebration of life is an event that truly celebrates the loved one’s passions, intellectual pursuits, personality, and personal accomplishments. A celebration of life can really have no structure at all and can be really anything you want.

A memorial service could be best described as a gentle mix of a traditional funeral and celebration of life. A memorial service has some structure, but it still allows you the flexibility to make the ceremony unique and personalized to fit the individual being honored. Also the mood generally lies somewhere in the middle of completely somber and celebratory.

What is the difference between Funeral vs Memorial Service?

In many ways, a memorial service is actually quite similar to a funeral service. A funeral service occurs with the body is present and has four main parts: the visitation, funeral, committal, and reception. In contrast, a memorial service contains much of the same structure although the deceased’s body is not present at the service.

Because a memorial service occurs after the remains have been cared for, there is often more room for creativity. This is because your family can take more time to plan a ceremony and decide how you want to pay tribute to your loved one.
