In recognition of Hepatitis Awareness Month, it is important to spotlight conditions that affect liver healthโ€”like autoimmune hepatitis. ๐Ÿ’š

Autoimmune hepatitis is a rare disease in which the bodyโ€™s immune system attacks its liver cells and causes long-term inflammation and liver damage. Many times, initial symptoms of autoimmune hepatitis may be minor or go unnoticed. When they occur, the most common are fatigue, abdominal discomfort, aching joints, itching, jaundice, enlarged liver, nausea, and spider-like angiomas on the skin. While there is no cure for autoimmune hepatitis, treatment can help and early diagnosis is key to preventing serious complications like cirrhosis and liver failure.

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’™ Hepatitis D is one of the five known hepatitis viruses and one of over 100 types of liver disease.

Hepatitis D is most common in regions such as Eastern and Southern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, West and Central Africa, East Asia, and the Amazon Basin. The virus only occurs in individuals who are also infected with hepatitis B, with symptoms typically appearing 3โ€“7 weeks after infection. Like hepatitis B, it spreads through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. While the current primary treatment for hepatitis D helps about 30% of cases, ongoing research is paving the way for more effective treatment options.
