March is Women’s History Month, and all month we’re celebrating women making a difference in liver health. 💚💙

Today we’re featuring Renu Dhanasekaran, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor at Stanford University.

Drawn to complex clinical challenges, Dr. Dhanasekaran chose hepatology for its multidisciplinary care and transformative therapies — from antivirals to liver transplantation. Seeing patients with advanced liver tumors return years later, cancer-free, continues to fuel her clinical and research work.

Through her involvement with American Liver Foundation as both a peer reviewer and research grant recipient, she has helped advance rigorous, patient-centered liver disease research nationwide.

Fun fact: She speaks six languages and was once a national finalist in medical Jeopardy!

Today is Rare Disease Day, and we’re turning our focus on Lysomal acid lipase deficiency (LALD). LALD is a rare, genetic condition that causes individuals to have an uncontrolled buildup of fatty material in their cells. Most people will have symptoms by the age of 5. This Black History Month, American Liver Foundation (ALF) spotlights Dr. Lewis R. Roberts, MB, ChB, PhD, an internationally recognized liver cancer researcher at Mayo Clinic whose work is transforming how we understand, detect, and treat liver cancer.

As a Black physician-scientist, Dr. Roberts brings personal urgency to his mission. After witnessing loved ones lose their lives to advanced liver cancer caused by hepatitis B, he committed his career to advancing early detection, prevention, and equity—particularly in communities disproportionately affected.

His leadership continues to move us toward earlier diagnosis, better outcomes, and a future where all communities have equitable access to liver health.
