Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airways collapse intermittently during sleep, resulting in breathing pauses. This condition is frequently accompanied by snoring 💤

Adopting a side or stomach sleeping position may aid in keeping the airways unobstructed, thereby decreasing snoring and easing mild cases of apnea.

Obstructive Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax. These muscles provide support to various structures such as the soft palate, uvula (the dangling tissue at the back of the throat), tonsils, side walls of the throat, and the tongue.

When these muscles relax, the airway becomes narrower or may even close as you inhale. This restriction can lead to inadequate air intake, reducing the oxygen levels in your blood. Your brain detects the breathing difficulty and briefly rouses you to reopen the airway. This awakening is usually so brief that you are unaware of it.

During these episodes, you may snort, choke, or gasp for air. This cycle can repeat itself 5 to 30 times or more per hour throughout the night, making it challenging to achieve deep, restful sleep.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea😴.

A CPAP machine uses a hose connected to a mask or nosepiece to deliver constant and steady air pressure to help you breathe while you sleep.

One of the biggest side effects is that air can get trapped in our stomachs. It can be very painful! In these situations we want our patients to try a different type of cannula.

If this does not solve the issue then we recommend a Mandibular Advancement Device that will help reposition the jaw to help you breathe when you sleep.

Researchers have suggested various mechanisms through which obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may contribute to nighttime urination😮.

These include increased stress on the bladder due to low oxygen levels and the release of hormones that stimulate urine production.

Experts estimate that up to half of individuals with OSA experience nighttime urination.
