September is National Recovery Month. We join our RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Prevention & Recovery team in recognizing all who have been impacted by substance use disorder and offering help for anyone on their recovery journey and their loved ones who support them.

This year we’re encouraging everyone to be a hero and carry naloxone. This lifesaving, opioid overdose-reversal medication, provides individuals the opportunity to receive emergency care and recovery support. In this way, naloxone helps open a window to recovery and provides hope to individuals, their families, and communities.

A $2.8M National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to develop new devices to treat epilepsy has been awarded to Dr. Hai Sun, chief of Neurosurgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, and vice chair of clinical affairs and associate professor of neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Sun will work with faculty at Emory University School of Medicine and Stevens Institute of Technology to develop the next generation of responsive neurostimulation devices that can be implanted in the brains of people affected with severe epileptic seizures to reduce or eliminate their occurrence.

Researchers from Rutgers Health and other institutions were awarded a grant for $2.8 million over the course of three years from the National Institutes of Health to improve implantable devices for epileptic patients.

RWJBarnabas Health’s Global Health team recently visited Utuado, a rural and mountainous agriculture community in Puerto Rico, in partnership with Direct Relief, to provide cardiology, pulmonology and gynecology services at COSSAO Community Health Clinic. The team also provided homebound visits and health checks to local residents. Over the years, both RWJBarnabas Health and Direct Relief have worked to increase access to health care services through partnerships with community-based organizations on the island.
