For anyone waiting for the ‘right time’ to take a yoga training program…now might be that time for you.

My Story: This was me in the summer of 2009 at my Yoga Teacher Training graduation party. I was 22 and had been practicing for about 3 years. I started yoga in college because my roommate, a journalism major, was doing a research report on Bikram Yoga, and she invited me to go to a class with her as research. I fell in love with Bikram Yoga for its intensity, but also for its structure. I felt like it helped keep me together because my life was literally falling apart.

In this photo in 2009 I had already been in rehab twice for an eating disorder and was also 4 months out of a hospital stay for a serious GI infection that typically people don’t contract until they are in their 70s or later. I had severely damaged my body.

Having lost my hobbies, values, job, happiness, health and friends because of my eating disorder, yoga helped me start my life over. In order to practice yoga the way that I wanted to, I needed to be feeding and treating my body better. I found a yoga studio that felt like home and it was here that I learned about the power of a community.

I saw what yoga was doing for me and I wanted to share that with others but, more importantly, I wanted to become a bigger part of a yoga community that was becoming a family for me. I was full-time college student at the time and found the least expensive training that worked with my class schedule and I got my certification. *Side note: I don’t suggest you choose your training that way*.  But needless to say, I was eager to learn more about the practice, to make friends with similar interests as mine and to challenge myself, and I am SO grateful I did.

I have been teaching yoga for 15 years consistently, owned a studio, and run 3 previous teacher trainings.

I’m proud to co-lead the Baker Street Yoga Training Program in 2 weeks and I hope you’ll consider joining! I’m here to answer any questions you may have!

Last call! Workshop is TOMORROW! Register at the link in our profile!

In Sanskrit, Krama means a step, progression, or a process in time. A Vinyasa Krama-based class includes several similar sequences that build upon each other. Geared towards current yoga teachers who want to enhance their sequencing skills and towards yoga students who want to inform their home practice, this intensive will focus on building a class that leads to peak, “advanced” yoga postures.

Participants will walk away with:
- An awareness of how to break down advanced postures
- An understanding of the importance of the progression of a class
- A sequencing formula / guide
- The tools to create a safe and accessible sequence

Price: $125

*Participants of this course earn 6 Yoga Alliance CE hours

The SOMA Adult School starts up again in just a few weeks! I love teaching these classes so much.

At The Yoga Ground my favorite class to teach was my weekend beginner class. The goal of my studio was always to be the place for students to come try yoga for the first time. My hope was to reach those who weren’t just scared to try yoga, but scared of yoga studios. The people who were scared of feeling bigger than, less flexible than, a different color than, whatever else than everyone else that walked through studio doors based on the ridiculous yoga marketing and influencers they see in the world.

I was happy to bring that to the SOMA Adult School last fall and am so excited to bring it this spring!

Classes are held at Columbia High School in Maplewood. You don’t have to be a South Orange / Maplewood resident to attend.

I’ll be teaching two types of classes:

- Absolute Beginners: This class is for those I mentioned above. The one’s that are drawn to yoga but wouldn’t dream of going to a studio. This is for people who have never or nearly never taken a class and don’t know the fundamentals of poses like child’s pose or downdog. Classes include slow stretching, ending relaxation, and a really in depth focus on one or two common yoga poses.

Level 1: This is still a beginners class, geared towards people who have already taken my Absolute Beginners class OR people who have done a handful of yoga classes and have an understanding of some common postures, but still need to move slowly and want to expand their pose repertoire. This class will be a little more flow oriented - but still very learning/beginner based.

See the photos for the time and dates for each class! You must sign up for the entire semester of one (or more) classes which breaks down to just $16/class (just like we used to charged at TYG)

I love teaching yoga. When I got certified in 2009, I knew that I wanted to lead a yoga training one day.

I got certified when I was 23 and though I had already been through a lot (having been in rehab twice) I felt like I needed, not just more teaching experience, but more life experience; I decided I wanted to be teaching yoga for 10 years before I ran a training.

It seemed correct that I opened The Yoga Ground 2019. I hit my 10 year teaching anniversary and knew it was the time to lead a training; we led two YTT’s at The Yoga Ground.

My YTT felt different. I had gathered teachers with a vast array of specialty areas so that our students received excellent education. But I also offered a lot of scholarships. I knew that the more diverse the YTT class was, the more diverse student population we would reach, and that was always the purpose of my space.

When I closed The Yoga Ground, the idea of running another training seemed overwhelming. But when approached and I about leading a training at , it felt right. We had all been teaching together for years, they both helped facilitate the TYG YTT, and BSY is an open and welcoming space for students of all kinds.

If you know the 3 of us, you know that we are three different personalities with three different specialties.

Matthew is kind. He has been to India many times and has deep knowledge of and reverence for yoga texts. He teaches much of the philosophy portions of our YT.

Michael is brilliant. He studied Anatomy and Physiology at Penn State and loves of restorative yoga. He teaches much of the gross and subtle anatomy portions of our YTT.

Teaching for 15 years and owning and managing studios, I teach much of the teaching methodology in our training.

We have over 35 years of combined teaching experience and thousands of hours of training. I believe in our YT because it honors the rich history, context and theory of yoga. You’ll learn best practices to teach safe, inclusive classes to your family, friends and the folks at your favorite yoga studio.

Our next training starts 3/15 and we have a free class + Q&A on 2/15. We hope you’ll join us!

If you’ve followed my yoga teaching and studio ownership journey, you know that accessibility is one of, if not THE, top value that I hold when it comes to this practice.

I am SO EXCITED to be co-teaching the 200hr YTT this fall at !

Baker Street Yoga (BSY) is committed to sharing authentic, accessible and affordable yoga classes in New Jersey.

Join us for a comprehensive review of the different pillars that support a long-lasting yoga practice: Ethics, physical postures, breathing practice, meditation, philosophy and more. You’ll learn how to sequence yoga postures together, lead group and private yoga classes, and manage your own yoga-related business. Your yoga teachers—Kristen, Michael and Matthew—bring with them years of education disseminated from modern yoga masters including Coby Kozlowski, Alan Finger and David Harshada Wagner. Most importantly, though, they’re students hungry to learn more about yoga—just like you.

To include in our yoga training programs the widest audience possible, we’re proud to offer one BSY student a scholarship to the Fall 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Maplewood, NJ.

The average tuition of yoga training programs, like the cost of everything else today, has skyrocketed. While that’s mostly due to larger yoga chains, the news isn’t all bad: The rise in price also has ensured yoga teachers get paid fair wages, something to which we at BSY have long-committed ourselves. As such, we’re able to offer a tuition of $1200 total to one BSY student—someone for whom this program would improve their life circumstances. Maybe you’re a BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ student who’s felt disenfranchised your whole life. Or perhaps you know a single parent who spends their time and resources caring for everyone else, rarely themselves. Trapped in a job for which you have no passion? Yoga and meditation may clarify an alternative way forward.

We encourage everyone to apply.
