Lifestyle matters!
This is one of my most beloved posts from last year on Instagram so I’m reposting here as a gentle reminder. It’s something I think about all the time as a previvor who carries a high risk gene mutation for breast and colon cancer: What will I feed my cells today? What type of neighborhood am I creating for them?
・・・
We are forming microscopic clusters of cancer all the time. Autopsy studies of women who died in car accidents have shown that 40% of women aged 40-50 have microscopic cancers in their breasts. About 50% of men aged of 50-60 have microscopic cancers in their prostate. 100% of us by age 70 have microscopic cancers in our thyroid. How do you determine whether the cancer grows? The way you eat, move, think, sleep, socialize, and supplement. What’s arguably the biggest lifestyle factor? Food. Diet alone can modulate your risk of cancer by 30-35%. We used to think that we had to eradicate every cancer cell, now we know that the neighborhood of those cancer cells matters most. Create a good neighborhood by eating 1-2 pounds of vegetables per day, anti-inflammatory protein and slow carbs, and plant-based fats, as well as getting 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week, and at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Hang out with benevolent people who support your health goals. Break up with sugar, alcohol, and excess quantities of food. Find your purpose. Practice intermittent fasting, meditation, yoga, gratitude.
