Increasing HDL "Good" Cholesterol:
HDL cholesterol is responsible for clearing out the body of LDL cholesterol. This is important because high levels of LDL are bad for overall health. Raising levels of HDL can help combat high cholesterol levels overall. Below are some things that can help raise HDL levels.
• Don’t smoke: Smoking ci******es lowers HDL levels.
• Exercise: Physical activity not only lowers triglycerides, but it can help raise HDL levels.
• Limit processed foods: The high amount of trans and saturated fats in processed foods negatively affects HDL cholesterol.
• Eat nuts: Studies show that small servings of nuts can help raise HDL levels and helps limit the amount of LDL cholesterol absorbed by the body.
While cholesterol is necessary to live, high levels of LDL cholesterol have negative health consequences. Raising HDL levels can help combat it. These above steps can also help manage all cholesterol levels in general.

The Importance of Skin Health in Older Adults:
Skin health is a vital, if often overlooked, aspect of overall well-being. This is especially true for older adults. Our skin forms a protective barrier that shields our bodies from outside forces. These can range from harmful bacteria to sun damage. As we get older, our skin becomes more vulnerable to injury. This can lead to the skin not performing its job as well as it should. Below, we’ll outline some skin care tips.
• Don’t use harsh soaps: Harsh soaps can dry out the skin. Older skin is already more likely to dry out on its own without the use of such products.
• Moisturize after bathing: Baths can dry out the skin, but a hypoallergenic moisturizer can help keep that moisture in.
• Protect yourself from the sun: This includes wearing sunscreen and a hat when outside.
• Bundle up in cold weather: Extreme cold can harm the skin. Older skin is even more vulnerable.
• Practice good nutrition: Eating right can help keep your skin in good shape.
• Good hydration: Hydration is one of the most important aspects of skin care. Drinking adequate amounts of water is an important step.
Skin care is important. Taking just a few steps every day can go along way towards preserving and improving skin health. This can lead to improvements in overall health as well.

Tools That Can Aid Parkinson's Patients:
Parkinson’s is a progressive condition that affects, among other things, mobility. This is because Parkinson’s can cause muscles to become rigid and painful to move. It can also cause tremors which interfere with activities such as eating and grooming. There are tools out there that can help make life with Parkinson’s less challenging.
• Grab bars: These can help people get more leverage when they try to get up from a sitting position. Strategic places for these are near the toilet, in the shower, and near beds and chairs the person frequently uses. If there are stairways that don’t have them already, install them there as well.
• Skid-proof mats: These can give traction in areas that might be slippery. Bathrooms and kitchens are great places for them.
• Electric grooming devices: Think of electric toothbrushes and razors. These don’t require a steady hand to avoid potential injury.
• Specialty dinnerware: There are cups, plates, and silverware specifically designed for use by people with Parkinson’s.
• Grabbing devices: These can help people with Parkinson’s pick up objects without having to stoop over to get them.
• Clothes with zippers and Velcro: Clothes that zip or Velcro are easier for Parkinson’s patients to dress with.
There are many tools and gadgets out there that can help make life with Parkinson’s less challenging. It’s all about knowing what to look for. Remember, if you or someone you know is struggling with Parkinson’s, we are here to help. Our care services can help with tasks around the house.

The Difference Between Companion Care and Personal Care:
Non-medical home care services are often divided into two categories: Companion Care and Personal Care. Both care types provide a similar range of services, but their scope of care is different. Knowing the difference is important in determining what type of care is more appropriate for you or your loved one.
Companion care, as the name suggests, involves companionship. Companions may help with hobbies, play games, and socially engage with clients. But companion care also includes house keeping, meal preparation, driving to appointments/engagements, and running errands. While providing these services, caregivers don’t touch or move the client in any way. Companion care is better suited to people who are mostly independent, but just need a little extra help with household chores. It’s a good choice for loved ones who live alone or are far from their families. Visits from companions help alleviate loneliness and provide a sense of security.
Personal care is similar to companion care, with an exception: personal care is hands-on care. Personal care aides help with bathing, toileting, feeding, and moving around. They also can provide medication reminders, but not actually administer any medication. Personal care is for people who need more support to live at home.
To find out which service is best for your needs, give us a call. We will create a care plan designed just for you.

Things Not to Say to Someone with Dementia:
Dementia is a hard condition to contend with. The communication skills of people who have it inevitably deteriorate. This can lead to tense moments. It can also open a family member or loved one to saying things that are hurtful to the person with dementia, though often not on purpose. Below, are some things to avoid saying to a person with dementia.
Remember When: Don’t challenge the memory of someone with dementia. If they are far along, then more than likely this will just lead to embarrassment for them. Instead, try talking about your memories and let the person join in if they wish.
I’ve Already Told You: Repeating yourself is frustrating. But, going about it this way only transfers your frustration to others and there is nothing constructive about that.
Would you like some help, sugar: Words like honey, sugar, sweetheart can come across as patronizing. No one likes to feel belittled, people with dementia even more so.
These are some things to avoid saying to people with dementia. Some of these may seem innocuous, but for a person with dementia, they can come across in a very different way.
