From complex spine surgery to advanced pain management, our strength comes from working together. Every patient deserves a plan built around both expertise and compassion.

August is Neurosurgery Awareness Month, a time to recognize the vital role neurosurgeons play in treating conditions of the brain, spine, and nervous system.

Our multidisciplinary team works closely with neurosurgeons to provide comprehensive care that helps patients regain function, improve mobility, and live life to the fullest.

In 2020, Dr. Harry L. Shufflebarger joined the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute. Dr. Shufflebarger has over 30 years of experience in care for children with spinal abnormalities and is a board-certified, nationally, and internationally recognized expert in the care of pediatric spinal orthopedics. He received his medical degree at Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1966. He then completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Emory affiliated hospitals. He stays involved with innovation, both in the non-operative and operative treatment of pediatric spinal conditions. His contributions in the area of spinal instrumentation have been significant and continuous for over two decades.

His notable accomplishments include professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery and a clinical professor at the University of Miami. He has a board certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, and the Scoliosis Research Society, serving as president in 2000.

Dr. Shufflebarger was a founding member of the very prestigious Harms Study Group 20 years ago, a national and international leader in research in pediatric spinal deformity, where he still serves on the executive committee. Dr. Shufflebarger’s passion for research has led to his high level of influence in his field. He’s the author of 20 textbook chapters, over 50 peer-reviewed spinal publications, has been published by abstract in over 200 instances, acted as visiting professor at over 100 institutions around the world, and has participated in over 150 spinal courses and conferences. I had the privilege to operate with Dr. Shufflebarger and to care for his patients, many of which are into adulthood and have children of their own. He will be missed. Rest in peace.

Taking time with each scan helps me focus on the details that matter because the right plan starts with understanding exactly what the patient needs. It’s not just about what we see but also about what we do next.

Dr. Scott Raffa, MD MBA

I am a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at Memorial Neuroscience Institute where I treat patients with various neurological disorders of the brain and spine, with a focus on complex spinal pathologies. Disorders treated include neck and back pain, sciatica/pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spine trauma, spinal deformity and more. I specialize in a variety of minimally invasive surgical techniques, including lateral retroperitoneal and endoscopic approaches to the spinal column. I also treat various cranial disorders such as primary and metastatic brain tumors, subdural and epidural hematomas, intracerebral hemorrhages, skull fractures, Chiari malformations, and vascular malformations, as well as carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapment and more. I am continually drawn to the field of neurosurgery by its individualized approach to patient care. I always appreciate working closely with patients and their families, knowing that any day could improve someone’s quality of life. For me, patients should come to expect an honest, transparent, and friendly conversation that yields an individualized and tailored care plan, consistent with Memorial’s overall goals and values. In addition to providing patient care, I also hold an MBA degree from the University of Florida Warrington College of Business and have professional interests in health administration, practice management and intraoperative efficiencies.
