Mrs Speechie P provides great examples to show the wide variety of characteristics that autistic individuals can possess. Looking at each person’s strengths and differences is ultimately what will drive quality, relationship- based therapy sessions

I have the privilege of working with so many of these kids who taught me that we all look at the world through a different lens and all views deserve to be acknowledged an celebrated 🌟

April is Autism Awareness Month and Tomorrow is World Autism Awareness Day 💛

And while I think the world has A LOT to learn about autism, I prefer to call it Autism Acceptance Month and celebrate differences and neurodiversity. So much of what people see and talk about autism is negative. But y’all, there is beauty in autism - there is love, strength, brilliance, friendship, and so much more. I have learned so much from the autistic children I work with and from the autistic adults who are willing to share about their experiences. These are my favorite kids to work with because they are SO amazing and fun! And today and this whole month, I will be celebrating neurodiversity a little extra- and sharing tons of information about autism!

👊🏾 Ready to level up?
Here's the scenario: child points to the puppy and a caregiver says "The puppy is sleeping! Can you say the puppy is sleeping?" ...Silence.
This is where the idea of "levels" comes into play! If a child is communicating through gestures, sentences may be too big of a jump. For this example, the child is using gestures and the next level is sounds. Modeling "woof" or snoring sounds may be more likely to elicit a response.
Little ones may vary in the level of language they use throughout an activity (development is not always a straight line), but meeting the child at their current level and then moving up is a great place to start! Many of the resources I create include levels with suggested prompts so caregivers know exactly where to start 🤗
Expanding on the puppy example 🐶 -
Attention (looking at the puppy) -
Gestures (pointing at the puppy) -
Sounds ("Woof") -
Words ("Puppy") -
Phrases ("Night-night Puppy")

🗣Mrs Speechie P shares important questions to ask about language development beyond “how many words does your child know?”. A knowledgeable SLP will look for so much more during language evaluation and therapy

Many parents are surprised to learn their child could benefit from speech therapy intervention when they met all of their milestones. Usually milestone questionnaires are limited to number of words and very basic skills - in reality, language development is pretty complex and has a lot of different components. If you have concerns with your child demonstrating any of the skills below, it would be a good idea to get a speech/language evaluation!
