As Keller Army Community Hospital concludes National Audiology Awareness Month, today’s focus is on the military member.

Hearing is essential for mission readiness and effective communication both on and off duty. It is fundamental to instruction, teamwork, reporting, and communication skills needed to accomplish the mission.

Selecting and wearing proper hearing protection can mean the difference between life and death and can mean the difference between hearing impairment and the ability to fully enjoy the sounds of everyday life. Remember: hearing protection devices are only helpful when worn properly and consistently.

If you feel you have a hearing issue, make an appointment to visit an audiologist who can evaluate your condition and provide rehabilitation and treatment.

More information can be found at https://keller.tricare.mil/Health-Services/Specialty-Care/Audiology.

We celebrate the hard work of every healthcare facility and engineering professional and recognize the role they play, especially our facilities and engineering team at Keller. From designing and building all the way to maintaining our facilities, these team members play critical roles in our organization to ensure our hospital is a safe and efficient environment for all patients, residents, visitors, and staff.

This year's theme – "Powering Progress, Protecting Care” – recognizes the vital work of facilities and engineering staff in creating and maintaining safe, efficient, and healing healthcare environments; it emphasizes how these professionals drive progress in healthcare through innovation, sustainability, and smart management strategies; and the crucial role these individuals play in ensuring patient and staff safety and supporting the overall mission of healthcare delivery.

In fiscal year 2025, the Keller facilities team has completed construction, modification, and restoration projects at a funding cost of more than $110 MIL.

To Keller’s Facilities and Engineering team, we say “THANK YOU” for the exceptional work and commitment to serving patients. YOU are what makes Keller Army Community Hospital operate effectively.

Keller Army Community Hospital, in alignment with the American Physical Therapy Association, recognize October as National Physical Therapy Month – an annual opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of physical therapy; and a great opportunity to appreciate what PTs, PTAs, and students do to transform lives.

This year's theme – “Promoting Resilience, Movement, and Wellness” – focuses on physical therapy's role in enabling people of all ages to live healthier, more active lives and prevent age-related decline like falls and frailty.

A September 2023 report, “The Economic Value of Physical Therapy in the United States,” makes a compelling case for improved patient access to and coverage of physical therapist services. The report calculated the net benefits to patients and the U.S. health care system of choosing physical therapy over alternative treatments and underscores the high-value, lower-cost interventions physical therapy offers patients and the health care system. The report can be found at https://www.valueofpt.com/.

Keller Army Community Hospital is home to the Baylor University - Keller Army Community Hospital Division 1 Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship. The program produces clinical scientists to better serve Military Health System beneficiaries and the physical therapy profession. Keller will provide information to raise su***de prevention awareness and will provide information for anyone seeking emotional support or assistance in a suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

After your initial contact with a person experiencing thoughts of su***de, and after you’ve connected them with the immediate support systems they need, make sure to follow-up with them to see how they’re doing. Leave a message, send a text, or give them a call. The follow-up step is a great time to check in with them to see if there is more you can help with or if there are things you’ve said you would do and haven’t yet had the chance to get done for the person.

This type of contact can continue to increase their feelings of connectedness and share your ongoing support. There is evidence that even a simple form of reaching out, like sending a caring postcard, a phone call, or a visit, can potentially reduce their risk for su***de.

Keller Army Community Hospital recognizes World Rabies Day – an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the United States.

World Rabies Day aims to raise awareness about the impact of rabies on humans and animals, provide information and advice on how to prevent the disease in at-risk communities, and support advocacy for increased efforts in rabies control.

The theme for World Rabies Day 2025 is "Act Now: You, Me, Community". This theme emphasizes the importance of collective action to prevent and eliminate rabies. It encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to work together to vaccinate animals, educate the public, and support rabies control programs.

What the theme means is:

YOU – Take action in your personal life: vaccinate your dog, educate yourself about how to prevent rabies and Pre- and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, or advocate for better policies.

ME – Lead by example: inspire others, train professionals, or support rabies elimination efforts in your community.

COMMUNITY – Work together: organize vaccination campaigns, educate learners and their families, and push for stronger rabies elimination programs.

September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, and we all have a role in helping to prevent su***des. Keller Army Community Hospital and other mental health organizations, and individuals across the U.S. and around the world are raising awareness of su***de prevention during September.

Keller will provide information to raise su***de prevention awareness and will provide information for anyone seeking emotional support or assistance in a suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

It’s important to help someone with thoughts of su***de connect with ongoing supports (like the 988 Lifeline) that can help them establish a safety net for those moments they find themselves in a crisis. Additional components of a safety net might be connecting them with supports and resources in their communities.

Additionally, studies have found that individuals that called the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline were significantly more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful by the end of calls handled by Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training-trained counselors.

The “988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline” is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. 09/24/2025

Keller Army Community Hospital invites you to join us in celebrating National Surgical Technologist week from September 21st-27th. The theme for National Surgical Technologists Week (NSTW) 2025 is "Behind the Mask". This theme was announced by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) and aims to recognize the vital role surgical technologists play in ensuring safe and efficient surgeries every day.

In 1984, the Association of Surgical Technologists Board of Directors dedicated the third full week in September to recognizing you and your profession. National Surgical Technologists Week has been celebrated every year since and has become a national phenomenon.

Rooted in Patient Care
During World War II, the need for perioperative personnel was overwhelming. The role of the surgical technologist was born and evolved into a separate allied health field. Surgical technologists serve as an integral part of the surgical team providing surgical care to patients. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures.

US Army MOS 68D, the Operating Room Specialist, or Surgical Technologist, is a medical role focused on preparing and maintaining surgical environments, assisting during procedures, and managing medical supplies and equipment for surgery. Responsibilities include sterilizing and distributing equipment, ensuring cleanliness, and assisting the surgical team by managing the sterile field and instruments.

KACH Department of Surgery (DOS) is comprised of several US Army 68Ds and one civilian, all of whom are Surgical Technologists. US Army 68Ds receive their Surgical Technology education at the Combined Armed Forces program at METC in San Antonio, TX.

The Association of Surgical Technologists was established in 1969 by members of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Hospital Association (AHA), and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Today, surgical technologists are working in one of the fastest growing professions in the country. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the surgical technology profession will grow faster than the average of all other occupations through the year 2030, and it is anticipated that the volume of surgery will increase exponentially due to the expanding senior population. As the oldest and most widely recognized professional organization for surgical technologists, AST's primary purpose is to ensure that surgical technologists have the knowledge and skills to administer patient care of the highest quality.

AST, the only national organization that represents more than 80,000 surgical technologists, is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors. On the local level, 50 formed state assemblies address member concerns and issues.

The Association of Surgical Technologists is proud of our many military members and recognizes that the roots of our profession extend back to World War II. The AST Board of Directors appointed a Military Advisory Committee in 2010 in order to reach out to our servicemen and women who work in surgical patient care. The Military Advisory Committee serves as a resource for members who are active military, reserves and retired.
