The Puppeteer: Highlighting the Magical Life of Paul Davis
Paul Davis was a gifted artist who shared his talents in countless ways. As the longtime Artistic Director of the Puppet Showplace Theater in Boston, he was a master puppeteer dedicated to his craft. Paul worked within the traditions of puppetry to create a special kind of magic—conceiving, designing, and building nearly every element of his productions, from the puppets themselves to the sets, scripts, and sound effects.
Each performance was a year-long process. He sculpted and painted puppet heads, designed their personalities, and even crafted the intricate scenery. With a puppet in each hand, Paul brought entire worlds to life—such as his production of Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, which featured camels, elephants, slaves, and a nine-member cast moving seamlessly across the stage.
Paul’s artistry was recognized nationally. He received five Citations of Excellence from UNIMA-USA, the Puppeteers of America’s President Award (2021), and the National Capital Puppetry Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry proudly features many of his creations on display.
Paul was a resident of the German Centre’s Sally Matthews neighborhood from 2019 until his passing on August 4, 2025. While living here, he enjoyed reading, participating in daily activities, and sharing his quiet brilliance with those around him.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his two devoted friends who stood by him throughout his life and care. Paul will be remembered as an artist par excellence of American puppetry—and as a cherished member of our community.
