Claire Alice McManus is a Licensed Acupuncturist by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, and a Diplomate of Acupuncture by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Claire holds a Bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, a Master’s degree from the New England School of Acupuncture and a Doctorate in Acupuncture from The Pacific College of Health and Sciences. Since 2001, Claire has worked as both a Senior and Supervising Research Acupuncturist on several large randomized controlled trials funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and coordinated by the Osher Institute at Harvard Medical School. As a researcher, Claire has been affiliated with some of Boston’s finest teaching hospitals, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Cambridge Hospital and most recently Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Her current work with researchers at MGH uses functional MRI brain imaging to study the effects and mechanisms of acupuncture. Claire has taught nationally and internationally on acupuncture and has authored several articles on acupuncture research methodology published in North American and European journals. She has been featured in The Boston Globe and her work has been highlighted in Boston Magazine and The New York Times. She has been interviewed on CBS-TV Boston, and WBZ & WBCN radio, Boston. Before pursuing a career in medicine in 1995, Claire made a living as an organic livestock farmer. She carries that experience and care for animals with her today. While her research and private practice are primarily focused on humans, Claire receives referrals and requests for acupuncture consultations from veterinarians from all over the state. Her primary non-human patients are companion and service dogs. Claire’s professional interests in anatomy and respect for animals and the oceans have lead her to a specific niche; she is an active field volunteer with the New England Aquarium’s Rescue and Rehabilitation Program and works closely with veterinarians at The New England Aquarium and Zoo New England, translating the anatomical pathways of acupuncture to several mammalian and reptilian species to treat a variety of ailments.
