As Happiness Happens Month, August is the perfect time to be happy and share happiness. By sharing happiness, we can help make others happy through emotional contagion. When we express positive feelings and emotions, they’re often mirrored by others. That’s right—happiness is contagious.

Happiness is different for everyone. What are some of the things that make you happy? Leave us a comment—and then get out there and do those things that make you smile!

Minnesota summers are short, so many of us take advantage of the warm, sunny days while we can. And while it’s good to get out and enjoy the weather, breathe in fresh air, and soak up some vitamin D, protecting yourself outdoors is also important. We’ve compiled a list of some summer sun safety tips for seniors to help make your time outside just a little more comfortable. Find the link in the comments.

July is National Blueberry Month and the perfect time to highlight some of the ways these small, colorful fruits benefit seniors in our communities and beyond.

• With a high concentration of vitamins and antioxidants, blueberries can help enhance cognitive function and protect against chronic diseases.
• A good source of fiber, blueberries also aid in digestion.
• Blueberries can help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, aiding in overall health.

And they’re delicious! Our on-site chefs create daily meals using fresh ingredients like blueberries, other fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats to ensure residents always have options for healthy, nutritious meals.

As Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, June is the perfect time to talk and learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia in the hopes of better understanding memory loss and ways to combat it.

• Every 65 seconds in the U.S., someone develops Alzheimer’s disease.
• Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.
• An estimated 6.2 million people living with Alzheimer’s are 65 or older.

There is no known cure, but research suggests that a healthy diet and staying active—physically, mentally, and socially—can delay or reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

“I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren't trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.” — Umberto Eco

Thank you to all the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures who passed along their knowledge and experience without even knowing it. This weekend, and always, we celebrate you!

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Southview Senior Living.
