OCTOBER IS A TIME TO REMEMBER FIRE PREVENTION, BUT TRAINING EMPLOYEES TO EXTINGUISH FIRES ALSO INCREASES SAFETY AT WORK. THOSE NOT DESIGNATED AS AUTHORIZED IN THE EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN TO EXTINGUISH FIRES SHOULD GET CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, BUT THOSE THAT ARE DESIGNATED SHOULD HAVE TRAINING - BOTH CLASSROOM AND HANDS-ON. It is sad that 5,333 people died at work in 2019. Why are the numbers going up?!? Uncontrolled hazards. Make it your business to recognize and control all the hazards at work. 0 uncontrolled hazards= an injury-free workplace!

I always downplay Fire Prevention Week/Month because Fire Prevention should be year-round. However, if I need to recognize it, here I go:

Change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you change your clocks, test them monthly, change them out if they are 10 years old. Have a fire drill with your family, make sure you have a meeting place for when you evacuate. Inspect your home for areas where combustibles are too close to ignition sources. Remember the Fire Triangle - Heat, Oxygen, Fuel make a fire.

Stay safe from fire. Fire Prevention saves lives!

As we wait to see how bad the situation will get with COVID-19, there is something we can do to help.

As with all hazards we recognize, if engineering controls cannot eliminate or control the hazards to an acceptable level, we move on to administrative and work practice controls.

While federal, state, and local governments are applying both mandatory and optional controls, work practices are up to us. They are not much different from controls of flu and cold viruses. Social distancing, hand washing, coughing/sneezing in a politically correct way - all things we should already be doing - will all help lower the risk of transmission.

Finally, stay informed. The more we know about how COVID-19 is transmitted from person to person, the easier it is to protect ourselves and our loved ones, and the less we are afraid.

Stay healthy. Stay safe.

The National Safety Stand-Down to prevent falls in construction is May 6-10, 2019. How will you celebrate? A session of training? A Tool Box Talk? A fall protection inspection?

Falls claim lives in General Industry, as well. The stand-down shouldn't be only for construction.

What about at home? How safe are you with ladders? You never use chairs, boxes, etc., to reach your work, right?

Take a moment this week to ensure your safety, and the safety of co-workers when it comes to fall protection.
