Let’s talk.. dilators! And don’t cringe. Even though you may want to. Because let’s face it, if you have pelvic pain with any sort of penetration, these would make anyone want to run and hide.
But actually.. these are super helpful tools for helping with pelvic pain as they can help loosen up the tension happening down there causing things to feel tight.
Tighter is not better!
So as a pelvic floor specialist.. I’d highly encourage using dilators if sex with your partner or even putting in a tampon is just too painful.

A common misconception with many people who have experienced a long period of knee pain is that they just “have bad knees”. We have some good news! You actually DON’T.. because that’s not a thing. You just haven’t had the right treatment for it. When people come in to see us for pain in a specific area, this is the reason we don’t look at JUST the knee or location of that person’s pain. Your body works as a whole system and almost always, there are other issues going on that are causing you to feel pain. So.. one more time.. You don’t have bad knees! :)There is hope. Runners! Have you ever heard the term “rooting”? This is an important thing to consider if you want to optimize not only your running technique but maintain a healthy pelvic floor.
As you know, running is a continuous series of controlled, single leg falls. If there’s ever instability happening in the lower body, then it doesn’t create a great space for your pelvic floor to thrive.
Knowing how to “root” into the ground can help you activate all the right muscles in your legs and hips which allows your pelvic floor muscles to also engage properly.
A really great way to get good at this is to work rooting into your strength training and single leg work. That way, when you’re running.. your body will already know what to do without you having to think too hard about it! 😊
