Nashoba Pediatric Therapies Caring for Kids and Families

Nashoba Pediatric Therapies provides pediatric occupational therapy services at our clinic in West Townsend, MA.

We are "in network" with most insurance plans in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. At Nashoba Pediatric Therapies, we are able to provide your child with highly individualized services. We place a high value on parental input and encourage parents, siblings and other important people to take part in all aspects of your child's OT programming when appropriate. Our programming begins with a phone or

virtual intake meeting prior to your child's first visit. This allows parents to discuss concerns and ask questions at a time and place convenient for you. During your child's first visit, we will spend time getting to know each other in a playful and engaging manner. The occupational therapist will gain knowledge of your child's challenges while developing a friendly and meaningful rapport. After this initial visit, a comprehensive and individualized evaluation and treatment plan will be compiled and shared with parents. Follow-up visits will be planned to address parents concerns and findings discovered during the evaluation process. We accept most major insurance plans including:

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mass
Anthem BCBS (New Hampshire)
Harvard Pilgrim Health Plan
Aetna
MassHealth
NH Medicaid
WellSense
New Hampshire Healthy Families
Allways Healthplan

Additionally, we can accept the following in many circumstances (please inquire to confirm):
Cigna
Health Plans Inc
United
TriCare

Well rounded play that allows children to explore how their bodies work, the attributes of objects within their environment, how to use those objects, how to interact with other people in their environment. That is enough, then our children would be ready for school and structured learning.

Yes, it’s true that Kindergarten has transformed into First Grade. Yes, children will need to learn academics, listen and sit still. But that certainly doesn’t mean that these lessons should be straight-jacketed onto them in the toddler and preschool years. In fact, the funneling down of structured learning is all the more reason to let children play while they can. We must fiercely protect this precious, ever shrinking window of time for our children.

Play is enough. Play is enough. Play is enough. This should be our educational mantra for the first 5 years.

As little as an hour a week of outdoor learning has tremendous benefits for children and also boosts teachers' job satisfaction.

It's more than a change in our language. It's a change in how we see our Autistic clients. They are doing their best in a world that doesn't understand them and isn't set up for them. We can approach their needs with genuine care, empathy, and curiosity. This starts with us doing our work to take their perspective. It doesn't start with observing their behavior and trying to shape it through behavioral approaches.

What a great illustration of what can result when you meet someone with calm - or having our own storm met with calm.

When I hear, “Mom, I need help!” or “Mom, I can’t do this,” my first instinct is to spring into action and save the day. But before we don our superhero capes to rescue children from struggle, we need to ask ourselves what we’re accomplishing. Does sparing children from struggle help or ...

SO TRUE! JUST ONE MORE REASON TO START LEARNING DEVELOPMENT EARLY

Another reason to change the brain early in a child's life with more movement, cross-patterning exercises, sensory integration and gross motor/fine motor activities.

Conventional wisdom might call it unwise to suggest negatives about a practice that probably 90% of parents do with their babies (n.b. – a very unscientific survey). Is it really worth the grief to get into it? After struggling with this for a while now, my passion for natural gross motor developm...

This goes hand in hand with Ross Greene's mantra "Kids do well if they can". Parent's often comment that I am so patient with their children. I try to explain that this paradigm shift is the reason. Once you see where behaviors are coming from, helping kids through the tough moments becomes much easier.

Only looking at observable behavior (surface behaviors), doesn't tell you anything about what's actually causing the behavior.

You start solving problems when you start diggin'!

Image Description: Title: The “Why of A Behavior”. Two holes with a man digging in each hole: First hole is shallow with subtitle “The old way of thinking”. Underneath are the words “defiant”, “escape”, “avoiding” and “attention seeking”. Second hole is very deep with the subtitle “A necessary paradigm shift” (supported by brain science). Underneath are the words: sensory processing”, “emotional regulation”, “motor challenges”, “learning disabilities”, “trauma”. The function of any behavior is much deep than phrases like attention seeking. This shallow analysis will lead to using rewards and punishments to get compliance. Want to improve behavior? Solve the problem. How do you solve the problem? Dig Deeper. Greg Santucci, Occupational Therapist.
