A HUGE thank you to our friends Bud & Mary’s for their $5,000 donation to Above + Beyond Cancer! 💟

Bud & Mary's AWARE-N-US is dedicated to supporting underrepresented communities in the cannabis industry by raising awareness and supporting initiatives through impactful partnerships. "Juicy Melons" was developed to raise awareness for breast cancer with a percentage of the sales donated back to Above + Beyond Cancer. The product was sold in 4 states, including Iowa, for the month of October.

"At Above + Beyond Cancer, we believe in caring for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—throughout the cancer journey. We are grateful to Bud & Mary’s for their commitment to our mission and for recognizing the importance of bringing hope, healing, and community to cancer survivors and their families." said Dr. Richard Deming.

Thank you, Bud & Mary's!

Happy Halloween! 🎃Candy is everywhere this week so here some fun alternatives to stay on your health journey:

🍫Dark chocolate: Opt for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa, as it is rich in antioxidants and lower in sugar than milk chocolate.
🍎Dried fruit and fruit strips: Choose dried fruit with no added sugar, like raisins or dried cranberries, or 100% real fruit leathers. These contain natural sweetness, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants.
🍿Popcorn balls: Make your own popcorn balls and use nut butter or honey as a binder instead of sugary syrups. You can also add nuts, seeds, or small pieces of dark chocolate.
🥜Nut-based treats: Chocolate-covered almonds or peanuts are a good choice because they combine fiber and healthy fats with chocolate.
🍭Hard candies: Hard candies like peppermints or lemon drops can help relieve nausea and are often effective for eliminating bad tastes in the mouth.

We are thrilled to share that our keynote for Celebrate this year is actress, New York Times bestselling author, writer, activist, and cancer survivor - Annabelle Gurwitch!

Known for her roles on beloved shows like Seinfeld, Murphy Brown, Boston Legal, and Dexter, Annabelle also co-hosted TBS’s Dinner & a Movie and was a regular commentator on NPR. In the spring of 2020, a routine COVID test led to an unexpected diagnosis of Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer — despite her being a non-smoker. Since then, Annabelle has used her voice and platform to become a powerful patient advocate, sharing her story across the country and in national publications. Her journey of resilience and advocacy will inspire and move us as we come together to celebrate and make a difference in the lives of cancer survivors in Iowa.

The Above + Beyond Cancer team worked on our continuing education of cancer-related topics last week at the Iowa Cancer Consortium Summit! We learned about topics such as to***co use, environmental factors with culture and life stages, and new screening options. We also heard from people making waves in the cancer community all over Iowa. Our very own Mary Van Heukelom did a short mindfulness session during lunch and moderated the survivor panel discussion to end the day. We're thankful for our relationship with the Iowa Cancer Consortium and for this day of learning!
