"Thank you for your generous donation of blood. I am a currently battling breast cancer and needed a transfusion during my chemo therapy treatments. Without your generosity I would have been very, very sick. Thank you and I hope you continue to give as it means so much to the recipients like myself!"

Patients going through cancer treatments are one of the most frequent reasons for platelet transfusion. Chemotherapy and radiation can suppress bone marrow function, leading to a significant drop in platelet production.

Memorial "Day of Giving" for Don

Last month, friends and family came out to the Donor Center in Mitchell, South Dakota to honor Don Curtis, a lifelong blood donor. He began donating blood in high school, and had given over 5 gallons.

“It’s amazing to see how many people want to give back in his name." said Valerie Curtis, Don's wife. "That’s what he would have wanted.”

“My husband (Jack) was diagnosed with throat cancer early this summer. He was in need of a blood transfusion. During the course of his (chemo and radiation therapy) treatment, he needed 2 more blood transfusions. If it hadn't been for donors, I don't know what we would have done.

In the United States, only about 51% of people know their blood type. But it's very important to know, and super easy to get the answer!

There are three main ways to find out. You could have your doctor do a blood test, try an at-home testing kit, or (the best option) you could donate blood!
