when you heal your skin naturally from the inside out, you can literally put ANYTHING on your skin and it will not break you out because the root causes have been addressed 🤯

if you’re new here, hi I’m Katie, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist specializing in acne + eczema. I went through years of sensitive acne prone skin and was always chasing a new skincare product or topical that would hopefully be the permanent fix for my skin. shocker: I never found it because it doesn’t exist.

Topicals are meant to help temporarily control acne not truly heal it. Because how could they truly heal it if they didn’t cause it? The cause is deeply rooted in gut dybiosis, hormone imbalances and mineral insufficiencies.

I see so many people freaking out over the shea butter in new skincare line because it’s “pore clogging” but no product is pore clogging when you have addressed the root causes to your acne.

And tbh the comedogenic ratings are widely praised but extremely inaccurate. Most come from outdated rabbit ear studies using ingredients in unrealistic amounts, not real human skin or finished products. They are not something you should look at to see whether a product is right for you.

Comment any “pore clogging” product or ingredient below that you want me to try… it can literally be butter from the kitchen… I will put it on my skin and show you guys!

News Flash: Your IBS and SIBO aren’t healing by going low fodmap 😬

This diet is just a temporary way to mange your symptoms and staying on it long term can actually lower beneficial gut bacteria, reduce diversity in your microbiome which all leads right back to the development of food sensitivities… 🫠

Most IBS/SIBO symptoms are coming from things like:
-poor stomach acid or enzyme output
-imbalanced gut bacteria (dysbiosis)
-sluggish bile flow
-chronic stress
-bacterial or parasitic infections 🪱
-sluggish metabolism
-intestinal permeability

So instead of asking:
“what foods do I need to eliminate?”

Start asking:
“why is my body struggling to break these foods down and how do I improve that?”

Because when you fix the environment…
you don’t have to fear the foods anymore. This is how I help my clients properly heal and prevent relapse in not only their GI symptoms but also their skin. 95% of my acne patients have acne due to problems in their gut.

I absolutely love the GI Map stool test because it tells us the WHY behind your symptoms and allows me to see your hidden root causes that are individual to you, not your condition 💩

Comment “GI” and I will send you more info on this test along with other functional testing you can get done that isn’t a breath test (so many false positives with those!) 🦠

Have you been diagnosed with SIBO or IBS before? Most people who get diagnosed with IBS actually end up having SIBO but their doctor didn’t run proper testing to figure this out!

Is matcha better for acne than coffee?

For me… 100% yes… and here’s why 👇

I personally can’t do coffee. Not because it’s “bad” but because of what it does to my body.

Every time I drink it, I get:
• anxiety
• that wired but shaky feeling
• a crash later

☕️ Coffee = fast, intense stimulation
Coffee spikes cortisol + adrenaline quickly.
If your nervous system is already a bit sensitive (or you’re running on stress), it can push you into that anxious, overstimulated state

Now layer this with hormones…

🔥 If your DHEA is high
DHEA is an adrenal hormone (your “stress + androgen” hormone).

If it’s already elevated:
• your body is more “amped” baseline
• you’re more sensitive to stimulants

So adding coffee on top = pouring gasoline on the fire
→ more anxiety
→ more oil production
→ more acne potential

This is why some acne-prone girls feel worse on coffee and don’t know why. However, it’s not bad for everyone with acne across the board. You will have to do a bit of trial and error and see how you feel!

🍵 Why matcha feels different for me

Matcha still has caffeine… BUT it comes with:
• L-theanine → calms the nervous system
• slower caffeine release → no spike + crash
• higher antioxidant content → supports inflammation pathways

✨ The key takeaway
It’s not that coffee is “bad” and matcha is “good.”

It’s that:
👉 if your adrenals are already stressed (high cortisol, high DHEA), coffee can be too much stimulation

And your skin will often reflect that.

I go through all of this in way more detail in my program The Acne Solution ♥️ I help you navigate all the truths & myths to clear your skin! Link in bio to get your spot while it’s on sale!!

Are you a matcha or coffee drinker? And what type of milk are you adding? So curious on this!

I post so many simple tips like this to help you clear your skin & they actually work!! 🥰 follow along for more!

Pomegranate’s polyphenols have been shown to increase Akkermansia, a key healthy gut bacteria that helps strengthen the gut lining and lower inflammation (PMID: 26189645).

Why does that matter for your skin?

Because low levels of beneficial bacteria like this are linked to gut imbalance → increased inflammation → breakouts, eczema, and other skin issues.

This is the gut-skin axis in action. It’s so important to support.

Your skin is just a reflection of what’s happening deeper. 80% of my acne clients who do GI map stool testing with me have low akkermansia & daily pomegranate is just one of the many ways we get their levels back in check!

P.S. if you have ever taken antibiotics, been on the birth control pill or are buying the exact same foods at the grocery store every week .. you likely have some beneficial gut bacteria that is low 😮

Have you tested your healthy gut bacteria yet? Comment GUT & I will send you more info on the DNA based stool test I run in my practice and get incredible insight with! 💩

hate on tallow all you want but me & my clients are over here with the clearest skin using it on the daily 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tallow is constantly labeled as “pore-clogging”… but that claim is based on outdated comedogenic ratings that don’t reflect how ingredients behave in real human skin.

In reality:
• Tallow is incredibly compatible with our skin because its fatty acid profile is similar to our natural sebum
• It’s rich in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) that support skin repair, barrier function, and collagen production
• It’s anti-inflammatory, making it especially helpful for acne, eczema, and irritated skin
• It nourishes instead of stripping which is exactly what acne-prone skin actually needs

Now here’s where most people go wrong 👇🏼

Tallow-based products typically don’t contain water.
That means they’re concentrated.

So if you’re slathering it on dry skin and it feels heavy or breaks you out… it’s not that tallow is “bad” it’s that you’re using it wrong.

Try this instead:
Apply it to damp skin or mix it with a bit of water in your hands before applying.

& ask yourself…
Why are the majority of skincare companies shipping products across the world that are mostly water? I mean if you look at ingredient lists, aqua is almost always the first one! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Tallow skips the filler and gives your skin actual nourishment.

If it doesn’t work for you even after watering it down, that’s fine, skincare is individual.

But calling it “pore-clogging” all around is not accurate.

I get all my grass fed tallow products from (use discount code KATIEMCKERSIE)

Have you tried tallow skincare before??

As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who has seen hundreds of acne patients, you start to notice common patterns and this one I see to be a big trigger for acne 🚨

Overdoing certain plant foods (like legumes + cruciferous vegetables) 🫘🥦

Foods like beans, lentils, chickpeas, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and cabbage are often labeled as universally healthy… but in many cases, they can be very taxing on digestion and metabolism when eaten in large amounts or too frequently.

Legumes contain compounds like lectins, phytates, and other anti-nutrients that can:
• Irritate the gut lining
• Reduce absorption of key minerals like zinc, calcium, and iron
• Increase fermentation in the gut leading to bloating, gas, and endotoxin production

Cruciferous vegetables (especially raw or in excess) contain goitrogenic compounds that can:
• Interfere with thyroid function
• Slow metabolic rate
• Reduce the body’s ability to produce stable energy

Why does this matter for your skin?

When digestion is compromised, you produce more endotoxin (a byproduct of bacterial fermentation). This puts stress on the liver, increases systemic inflammation, and disrupts hormone balance all of which can directly show up as acne.

On top of that, impaired mineral absorption means your body may not have enough of the nutrients required for:
• Proper skin turnover (vitamin A, zinc)
• Balanced oil production
• Tissue repair and healing

So even if your diet looks “clean” on paper, it may not be supportive for your physiology.

For many people, reducing these foods (or preparing them properly and eating them in smaller amounts) while focusing on more easily digestible, nutrient-dense options can make a noticeable difference in their skin.

This is why it’s so important to work with a qualified practitioner to make your healing journey more efficient and effective! 💛 link in bio for ways to work with me!

I fear my skin healing journey would’ve been a lot faster / efficient if I did these things earlier on 😅

1. breakfast should be your biggest and most calorie dense meal of the day. lots of proteins fats and fibre with a bit of carbs for long lasting energy!

2. focus on optimizing my digestion before ordering a million supplements (I wasn’t absorbing anything I was taking lol)

3. skip the monthly bloodwork that told me nothing and invest in functional testing like GI map stool test, DUTCH hormone test and Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. Would’ve saved way more money in the long run bc no more trial and error!

4. throw my skincare in the 🗑️. I was exfoliating and cleansing my face like no other which just damaged my skin barrier and prolonged my healing

5. focus on adding foods in rather than cutting foods out! I was so scared to eat eggs, dairy, gluten, fruit, soy that I became so nutrient deficient and my thyroid struggled

What are some things you wish you knew / did earlier on in your skin healing journey?

the way doctors only give you one option for PCOS/endometriosis and thats birth control 😓🫠

birth control can suppress symptoms for some women (until you come off), but it doesn’t actually address why the condition developed in the first place and can make things way worse down the road. it works by shutting down ovulation and altering hormones which can temporarily mask symptoms like irregular cycles, acne, period pain, or heavy bleeding.

but these conditions almost always have underlying drivers that deserve attention too.

for example:

with PCOS, common root causes include
• insulin resistance or blood sugar dysregulation
• nutrient deficiencies
• adrenal stress / cortisol dysregulation
• gut and microbiome imbalances

with endometriosis, factors often involved include
• immune dysfunction
• impaired estrogen detoxification
• gut microbiome imbalances
• environmental toxin exposure

I have helped hundreds of women successfully reverse both of these conditions to the point where all their labs are 100% normal and they are completely symptom free WITHOUT birth control or any meds. Please know that you have options 💛

have you ever been told this too? let me know in the comments!

Bloodwork ≠ the full picture of your health.

Getting bloodwork done can be helpful sometimes, but more often than not, it comes back normal even when my clients clearly are suffering.

Blood tests measure what is circulating in the bloodstream at that exact moment. Your body works extremely hard to keep blood levels within a tight range because the blood supplies nutrients to vital organs like your brain and heart. This means the body will often pull nutrients from tissues, bones, and cells to keep blood levels “normal.”

So on paper, your labs might look perfectly fine… even when your tissues are depleted.

For example:
• Magnesium – less than ~1% of the body’s magnesium is in the blood, most is inside cells and tissues.
• Calcium – blood calcium is tightly regulated by hormones, and the body can pull calcium from bones to maintain normal blood levels.
• Iron – serum iron can fluctuate throughout the day and may not reflect long-term storage.
• Nutrients like zinc, copper, and B vitamins are primarily used inside cells.

This is why many people can have “normal labs” but still experience symptoms like fatigue, acne, digestive issues, hormone imbalances, or eczema.

Functional or root-cause testing often looks beyond blood alone, using other markers (stool, urine, hair mineral analysis, organic acids, etc.) to understand things like:

• gut health
• nutrient utilization inside cells
• mineral balance
• detox pathways
• microbiome balance
• inflammation + heavy metal toxicity

On a long term level. Bloodwork just one small piece of the puzzle, not the whole picture. Don’t fully rely on it and don’t feel discouraged if it doesn’t give you any answers!

Understanding what’s happening inside tissues and systems is where the real answers lie which is why most of the testing I run in my practice is the DUTCH hormonal panel (urine), HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis) and/or GI map stool test!

Have you been told your blood work looks normal but your skin, gut & hormones are clearly suffering? 🙋🏼‍♀️

teen acne not driven by the androgen surge during puberty??? whaaat!

ya I see this all the time in my practice so take this as your sign to dig deeper if your teen acne is not going away from typical treatments! you’re not the only one!

other common causes of teen acne I see frequently are gut dysbiosis and estrogen dominance / poor estrogen detox!!

The gut and skin are very closely connected. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced (often from antibiotics, high sugar diets, or processed foods), it can increase inflammation in the body, disrupt the immune system, and impair nutrient absorption. This can make the skin more reactive and prone to breakouts.

The gut also plays a major role in hormone regulation. Certain gut bacteria help metabolize and eliminate estrogen through what’s called the estrobolome. When the gut is imbalanced, estrogen can be re-circulated instead of eliminated, which may contribute to hormonal acne, especially around the cheeks, chin, and jawline.

On top of this, teens often have immature detox pathways, meaning their liver is still learning how to efficiently process hormones. If nutrients like B vitamins, magnesium, and fiber are low, estrogen detoxification can slow down even more.

This is why addressing acne often requires looking WAY beyond skincare!

My signature acne clearing program, The Acne Solutjon, addresses teen acne and all types of acne from the inside out 💕 comment TEEN for the link
