🍁 Happy Canada Day! 🍁

On July 1st, 1867, the Dominion of Canada was born through the confederation of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. This monumental day, initially known as Dominion Day, marked the beginning of a united Canada, rich in cultural diversity and natural beauty. In 1982, it was renamed Canada Day, reflecting our pride in our identity and independence.

Canada Day is more than just a celebration of our nation’s birth; it’s a tribute to the values and spirit that define us as Canadians. It’s about embracing our multiculturalism, respecting our Indigenous heritage, and fostering inclusivity. It’s a time to reflect on our shared history and the journey toward reconciliation and equity.

From coast to coast, we celebrate with fireworks, parades, and family gatherings. Cities like Ottawa light up with festivities, while communities across the country come together in unity.

Being Canadian means cherishing our vast landscapes, from the Rockies to the Atlantic, and embodying the values of kindness, diversity, and resilience. It’s about proudly waving the maple leaf and remembering the stories that shaped our nation.

Let’s celebrate the past, present, and future of our beautiful country. Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦

👶🏻 Baby born with 3 p***ses and no a**s. Rare medical case.

🗓️ Earlier this year in April 2023, a baby boy was born in Pakistan with two functional p***ses and no a**s, as published in International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.

👆🏻 Full article link in bio

🏥 On examination, doctors reported he had two “normal-shaped” phalluses, one of which was 1 cm larger than the other. They also noticed that the boy had no a**l opening.

🧬 What is Diphallia?
Diphallia is a rare genetic condition that occurs when an infant is born with a duplication of the p***s. There are various types of diphallia, ranging from complete to partial pe**le duplication.

🌎 Prevalence
Diphallia is estimated to occur in 1 out of 5–6 million births, with approximately 100 patients being reported within reported literature. The oldest reported case of diphallia was in 1609.

🔎 Signs and symptoms
When a baby boy is born with diphallia, doctors may notice abnormalities in his p***s, sc***um, or testicles. Infant may present with associated medical conditions including the following:

🔻 a**l atresia
🔻 ectopic sc***um
🔻 abnormal position of the kidney
🔻 atrial septal defect
🔻 bladder exstrophy
🔻 cryptorchidism
🔻 Inguinal hernia

👩🏼‍⚕️ Treatment
Treatment of diphallia is typically approached on an individual basis, as no two patients are the same. Surgery is the gold standard for correction.

🙋🏻‍♂️ Prognosis
Prognosis largely depends on a case by case basis. Infants born with diphallia can grow up to live a normal life span and enjoy fulfilling lives.

🔷 Breastfeeding benefits
🔹 Best source of nutrition
🔹 Protection against illness
🔹 Accessibility
🔹 Reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer
🔹 Reduced risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes

🔴 When NOT to breastfeed
🔻 Infant is diagnosed with galactosemia
🔻Mother has HIV and NOT on medications and/or does not have a low viral load during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum
🔻Mother is using illicit drugs or medications (eg. alcohol, opioids, P*P, and cocaine)

🔶 When to TEMPORARILY stop breastfeeding
🔸 Mother is infected with brucellosis (bacteria contracted from animal products of sheep, cattle, goats and pigs)
🔸 Mother is undergoing diagnostic imaging
🔸 Mother has active herpes simplex virus with lesions on the breast

💊 Medications and breastfeeding
Few medications are contraindicated while breastfeeding. Although medications do pass through the breast milk into the baby, most have no known adverse effect on milk or infant health.

🔬 Fertilization

🟣 Egg (Maternal) carries X gene⁣
🔵 S***m (Paternal) carries X gene or Y gene⁣

🧬 Mother always transfers an X gene while the father has a 50% chance to give the X and Y gene.⁣
👧🏻 An XX gene gives a girl⁣
👦🏻 An XY gene gives a boy ⁣

📃 Process of fertilization involves 4 stages:⁣

⤴ S***m transport⁣
🔹 Following ej*******on the s***m forms a protective coat for 20-30 minutes that protects during its travel⁣
🔹 During ovulation the uterus environment becomes more favorable for s***m survival⁣
🔹 The first s***m can the fallopian tube within minutes - but is not always the first to fertilize⁣
🔹 Mobile s***m can survive in the female reproductive tract up to five days⁣

🥚 Egg transport⁣
🔸 Ovulation begins with the egg transport and ends when it reaches the uterus⁣
🔸 Transport from the tube to the uterus can take about 30 hours⁣
🔸 Conditions affecting the uterus can impair the function and process of fertilization⁣

🔄 Fertilization ⁣
🔺 Following ovulation, the egg is capable of fertilization for only 12-24 hours⁣
🔺 Fertilization occurs in the section of the fallopian tubes known as the ampullar isthmic junction⁣
🔺 Fertilized egg then descends to the uterus and begins dividing (zygote -> blastocyst)⁣

🌱 Implantation⁣
▫️ After 5-6 days following fertilization, it begins the process of implantation in the uterus⁣
▫️ In nature, 50% of all fertilized eggs are lost before a woman’s missed menses⁣
▫️ The receptivity and the health of the embryo are important factors in the development process⁣

🎓 Which one is the symbol for medicine - do you really know?⁣

🔹 Many people recognize the caduceus as an emblem used to symbolize the medical arts, especially in the United States. However, this is a mistaken interpretation of Greek mythology.⁣

⚕️A more worthy symbol of medicine is the rod of Asclepius.⁣

🏛 Asclepius was a Greek god who was associated with the art of healing, making his staff an appropriate symbol of medical practice. Many health organizations adopted the rod of Asclepius as symbolic of their profession - depicted as a wand, rod or staff with a single serpent coiled around it. 🐍⁣

⚕️The caduceus symbol is used primarily in American medical circles. Consisting of a rod, staff or wand with two wings and two serpents entwined around it, the caduceus is also known as the staff of Hermes. ⁣

📜 According to mythology, the Greek god Hermes was a messenger. He was credited with escorting the dead to the underworld, sponsored alchemy and was the protector of thieves💰, liars🤥 and gamblers🎲.⁣

⁉️ So how did caduceus come about to be so widely used? The use of the caduceus in the United States as the insignia that is synonymous with modern medicine may be traced to the mid-1800s. ⁣

🔀 Some believe it was simply confused with the staff of Asclepius, as the symbols are similar. ⁣

🎖 Others cite the intelligence and scholarship of the military leaders, especially in the Army Medical Corps, stating that the caduceus was intentionally adopted as a classical symbol of strength and wisdom, and to distinguish medical personnel from military personnel.⁣

🤷🏻‍♂️ Somewhere along the line among the confusion and translation we have two widely used symbols of medicine. ⁣

☕️ Coffee & health benefits

📚 New study in Kidney International Reports and material presented at this spring's Scientific Session offer coffee cravers a reason to smile.⁣
⁣
☕️ Researchers found that participants who drank any quantity of coffee every day had an 11% lower risk for acute kidney injury than those who don't drink coffee. ⁣
⁣
🌎 The study included more than 14,000 adults from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. ⁣
⁣
📉 Among the participants, 17% drank more than three cups daily, 23% drank two to three cups daily, 19% drank one cup daily, 14% drank less than one cup daily, and 27% never drank coffee. Results showed that increased coffee drinking was linked with reduced acute kidney injury risks.⁣
⁣
🫀 Another study presented at found that coffee may be cardioprotective. Those who reported regular daily intake of two to three java fixes had significantly reduced risks for cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and death from any cause over 10 years.⁣

⚠️ Although research suggests health benefits for controlled coffee intake - you should be cautious of the amount you consume for yourself as it can have harmful effects on the body if taken in excess amounts. ⁣
