What environments do you breathe in the easiest ? Each environment offers a unique sensory experience, engaging our senses and encouraging us to be fully present in our bodies. From the scent of wildflowers to the sounds of a bustling marketplace, these experiences can ground us in the here and now, helping us stimulate or down regulate the nervous system.

How do you actually "process" emotions...

🌊Why is Emotional Processing Vital for Healing?🌊

Emotional processing in somatic therapy is a bridge between understanding (cognition/thoughts) and transformation deepening into the felt sense of the emotion itself). By acknowledging the sensations and emotions within, we can gradually free ourselves from the grip of past experiences and pave the way for a more empowered future. Tolerating emotions can be really challenging, a trauma-informed approach means I honour the wisdom of your body and boundaries in learning how to express and even befriend our most difficult emotions.

In the world of psychotherapy, why engage in creative arts expression?

🧠 **Beyond Words:** Sometimes, words fall short in capturing the depth of our emotions and experiences. Creative practices provide a new ways for clients to find their voice, allowing unspoken stories to be heard.

💡 **Accessing the Unconscious:** Creative practices gently open the doors to our unconscious mind. Through expressive movement, embodied insights arise that might have remained hidden under the surface

🌱 **Somatic Resource:** The act of creation offers a new resource to the nervous system. It becomes a channel to untangle complex emotions, transforming them into tangible forms that can be explored and better integrated

🤝 **Strengthening Therapeutic Alliance:** Foster a unique bond between therapist and client. The shared exploration of expressive arts brings a deeper understanding, amplifying the therapeutic alliance, and creating safety and warmth.

Let's embark on this creative journey together. 🎭💕

What is the 'somatic' difference in talk- therapy?

🌱Polyvagal Theory can help us track the ways our nervous system responds to cues of safety or threat. A somatic approach means that clients learn skills to create internal safety to process deeper, content. Grounding techniques and mindfulness promote equilibrium to approach the content of therapy from a place of less activation and retraumatizing.

Through purposeful grounding tools and the art of mindfulness, we navigate the waves of overwhelming sensations with resilience and grace.

What are internal/external somatic approaches in therapy?

🌿Internal Somatics 🌿:

**Focus on Sensations** Internal somatics directs our attention inwards, inviting us to connect with our body's sensations, emotions, and beliefs.
**Mind-Body Tracking**: Emphasizes the integration of mind and body, helping us become aware of how our physical sensations impact our emotional experiences.
**Regulation**: Internal somatics assist in regulating our nervous system by recognizing and managing overwhelming sensations through mindful awareness.

☀️External Somatics☀️ (i.e., Expressive Art Therapies, Dance/Movement Psychotherapy):

**Expressive Movement**: Past experiences can make it painful to stay with overwhelming sensations, external somatics engages our body in expressive movement and creative exploration to create a buffer.

**Emotional Release**: It offers a unique pathway for emotional release, allowing feelings to be expressed through movement rather than words.

**Relational Connection**: External somatics fosters connection with our surroundings, using movement to interact with the external world and connect with others.

💫 Both internal and external exploration of somatics hold the beauty of promoting self-awareness, healing, and connection. Work with me to journey into somatic practices offer diverse avenues to nurture our well-being. 💕

What Happens During A 'Typical' Somatic Psychotherapy Session🌼

- **Personalized Approach**: Sessions tailored to your needs, whether you prefer verbal expression or a somatic/creative approach for deeper integration beyond cognitive understanding.

- **Mind-Body Connection**: I use diverse set of somatic tools to enhance the connection between your mind and body, fostering a sense of internal safety and exploration.

- **Themes and Exploration**: Unlike, counselling, which may focus on the momentary topic, I weave together both the present moment experience with themes/goals the client identifies, to promote self-discovery.

- **Nervous-System Regulation**: Grounding techniques and mindfulness are introduced to manage overwhelming sensations, aiding in regulating your nervous system. This could be a subtle as body and breath awareness or as expressive as creating movement choreography together

Your journey towards healing is one where you feel empowered and your integrity is honoured. 🌟

Sometimes our outer appearance doesn't align with the inner experience of freedom, and it can be frustrating. When so much of our self-worth is tied to the aesthetic aspect of our being, we may even downplay the most liberating moments, unintentionally robbing ourselves of the gift of true presence.

Many people interested in somatic psychotherapy wonder how do we work with the body, when it feels numb, overwhelming or unsafe? Not all experiences are tolerable to hold in the body, especially when there has been trauma or disregulating emotion. Embodiment means we can also connect externally, resourcing through the earth 🌍 body, external objects or the space around us. Embodiment isn’t just our feeling inner sensations all the time, but the act of connecting through our sense of touch, smell, taste, sound and bringing tiny drops of awareness to our mind-body.

I offered a tiny sprinkle of DMT as part of a team builder this week ✨ . In 3 short months I am going to be a full-time solo practitioner, so it was delightful way to share some of the ways I work.

Those of you new to DMT (dance movement therapy ) it’s an expressive-arts , body-based psychotherapy that brings together mind, body and spirit as a way of processing beyond words. Expanding one’s movement repertoire becomes an access point to expand possibilities in relational connection , emotional processing, changing patterns and integrating post-traumatic growth. As I continue to practice, I realize my approach varies with both individuals and groups. Sometimes I use my sensorimotor psychotherapy background, which weaves together somatics, neuroscience and mindful study. Other times, I am offer a more playful attunement, using the therapeutic relationship itself, to help folks strengthen the pleasure of their aliveness. What is the point of “healing” if we aren’t connecting back to joy ? Regardless how open you are to exploring movement, sensation or embodied narratives, I strive to adapt to each individual or groups style.

As holidays come around the corner, so do old relationship dynamics, feelings of obligations, isolation and rejection and social anxieties that come with commercial ideas of celebration that been sold to us.

We took our mother to an artist talk for Artic/Amazon Networks of Global Indignity at . We have been practicing stepping into new experiences as a way to create memories, or as my mother says “colour in life, again.”

Read my latest newsletter to learn 4 ways to make the holiday traditions, not obligations.

I love this work. Dance/movement therapy in a community healing has been a game changer. This photo was from my 2015 launch of my pre-therapist life.

I was doing my masters and thought I would offer Bellydance bachelorettes experiences for new brides, but all the gigs I kept getting was for mindful movement. Organizations and institutes contacted me for stress reduction techniques, team building or finding ways to express resilience and metabolize the parts inside that needed compassion 🌪️ 🥰… jump to 2022 and stepping into in-person group therapy, it has been a courageous journey, one with tons and tons of support from my mentors and colleagues . Yet, the foundations of joy, self-compassion, pleasure of movement, unleashing our playful nature, and being held by a community container was always in my offerings 🙏🏽 . It has just begun to deepen. I am looking forward to more group offerings, organization and institutional wellness in 2023. Sign-up on my newsletter to know what’s coming and how to get involved

Incomplete transitions can make us feel vulnerable, stuck or frozen in time. We don’t always get to have a say when it comes to change… most of the time it catches us off guard. We can ask for our transitions to be meaningful, by creating rituals of closure, surrender, a finding the softness in our belly. Slow down, digest and savour the sorrow, joy and grief of what once was.

Another week of leading our Dance Movement Therapy Processing Group. I want to thank Avery who is a DMT student whose assistance is essential in co-creating the container. I want to thankJenn who makes sure the warm beverages are ready and the space is setup for this work. I am grateful that my vision of creating spaces for vulnerability, curiosity and welcoming transformation is shared with these powerful space holders. Community healing means we get to be held enough to do the work in a sustainable, generous way. 🙏🏽 💕

Day 1 of many new starts. Just here in my new office that I am subletting ! Although I am still few months away from full-time 🚀 solopreneurship, I am celebrating the seven-year journey that brought me to dance/movement therapy and somatics as psychotherapy. I wouldn’t be here without the abundant support from my mentors and colleagues, dance floors and my ancestors. I can hardly believe that my job is to dance with others, move with others, breathe with others and witness the unfolding of what was already whole. Damn, healing work feels this good 🪄

What are the benefits of group processing? The group can collaborate to create safer spaces for sharing and movement expression. Participants can learn from others who may have similar struggles and become a sounding board. The group can promote social and communication skills. Through the DMT and somatic framework the group can help individuals grow.

About Me

I want to create a culture that is tuned into the wonderment and joy of the body. My business both caters to celebrating events dedicated to delivering memorable experiences to honour your life’s biggest events, milestones or even just to sprinkle connection and excitement to your weekend. I also offer training and workshops in self-care through nourishing and mindful movement workshops. I am passionate about teaching belly dance to all levels and experiences. I strive to create accessible spaces both physically and emotionally so participants can and feel comfortable in their own skin and activate the joy of movement. In my teaching I focus on beyond "getting the moves right", but strive in supporting how movement can increase confidence, build community, embrace sensuality and develop new skills.
