Servicing Remote Communities through Telemedicine

Launched in 2016, this initiative out of Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital looks to extend specialized Crohn’s and colitis care to underserved communities. Dr. Geoffrey Nguyen and his team have identified geographic regions across Canada where people with IBD have difficulty accessing specialized care. The team at Mount Sinai Hospital are expanding telemedicine accessibility to patients through nurses who specialize in treating IBD while utilizing existing provincial telemedicine infrastructure. A clinical trial evaluating telemedicine offerings is underway in Ontario with a view to expand the program across the country.
