I've worked recently with two different people living with serious illness -- both following very different paths.
One sees this as part of her life, trying to live this last chapter with the values and priorities that matter most to her. She's building her care community and encouraging open conversations with her close-in circle of friends.
The other is "hoping for the best" and choosing not to have a plan for her care over the months and years ahead. When family members ask how she's imagining her care as she becomes weaker and less mobile, she closes down conversations.
I can tell you from decades of experience that the second option often brings more confusion, crisis, and disconnection to the person and their family. It's hard to witness.
And it's one of the reasons I left hospice work to open up conversations in our communities about how we die.
Join us in September for a really good class called "A Roadmap for the End of Life."
It's a perfect opportunity to reflect ahead of time on how you want to be cared for -- where you want to be -- what will guide your decisions when living with serious illness.
What if how you lived the last part of your life – and how you planned for it – was part of the legacy you leave behind?
