Measles Update:
2 more cases of measles have been confirmed in Knox county bringing the total to 3 in Knox & 9 in Ashtabula Cty. The 3 are adults who were international travelers and were not vaccinated. The Knox County Health Department has done contact tracing and has not identified any additional people who have been exposed.
One dose of MMR is protective for 93% of recipients. A second dose increases immunity to 97%. For our patients, we would recommend early vaccination with MMR. For children over 1 who have only had 1 MMR vaccination, the second MMR will count toward their vaccine total. Infants between 6 months and a year can receive an early vaccination, but it will not count toward their vaccination total, and they will still need MMR at 12-15 mos and 4 years old. We will do our best to accommodate these recommendations based on supply and appointment availability. If your child is coming into the office for an appointment already, we will offer early vaccination of MMR when appropriate.
Both our office and Nationwide Children's Hospital stress that measles is so contagious that, if you are concerned that your child has measles, you should not be seen at our office, the urgent care, or ER without contacting your provider first. We can arrange testing through NCH, but you will need an appointment at the lab so they can set up precautions.
