Real talk: rest and stretching probably aren't going to fix your sciatica. ❌

I know that sounds blunt. But I've had too many clients come in after months of faithfully doing "all the right things" and still being stuck to not say it directly.

Rest can calm a flare. Stretching can give you an hour of relief. But neither one touches the actual root: the inflammation, the muscle guarding, the nervous system that's stuck in protection mode, the movement compensations that keep loading the same structures over and over. 🏃‍♀️

🤯 And when stress is part of the picture, which it almost always is, that has to be addressed too. Stress keeps the nervous system in a state of bracing. Bracing keeps the muscles tight. Tight muscles keep the nerve irritated. The cycle continues. 🔄

You don't have to keep living in that cycle. This is super common, and it is so fixable.

Does dry needling actually help with sciatica? Short answer: yes. Here's why…

Most sciatica isn't caused by a structural disaster. It's caused by inflammation and muscle tension in the low back, glutes, and deep hip rotators, all of which are compressing the sciatic nerve and keeping it irritated. 🔥

Dry needling goes deep into those muscles, in ways hands simply can't reach, and helps them truly relax. It improves blood flow, reduces inflammation, and helps your nervous system shift out of protection mode.

Stretching is usually the first thing people try. And I get it… it makes sense. Something is tight, so loosen it up, right? 🤷‍♀️

🪢 Here's the truth: stretching doesn't fix muscle tension. Especially when that tension is your nervous system's way of protecting you.

When muscles in your low back, glutes, and deep hips are guarding, they compress the sciatic nerve.

🔥 That's what creates the burning, the cramping, the numbness down your leg. Pulling those muscles into a stretch tells your nervous system there's more threat, so they brace harder.

"Stress is just a mental thing. It doesn't affect my physical pain." 😅

We hear this all the time and completely understand why people believe it. Most of us have been told to treat the mind and body as separate things. But here's the truth: they are not separate. 🔗

😫 When your stress response fires… whether it's a hard conversation, an overwhelming schedule, or just the mental load of carrying everything, your body physically responds.

Muscles brace, breathing gets shallow, your jaw clenches, your shoulders inch toward your ears, your back gets stiff.

🔄 When that pattern repeats over and over without the stress being processed, it becomes stored tension.

Your nervous system stays in protection mode. And healing? It doesn't happen in protection mode. 🙅‍♀️

This is one of the most overlooked drivers pain, tension headaches, jaw pain, and muscle tension, especially in women who are carrying a lot.

It’s easy to overlook something as simple as your breath… but it plays a huge role in how your body feels. 😮‍💨

When life feels full (mentally, emotionally, physically), your body often shifts into a more protective state and that can show up as tension in your back, even if you haven’t “done anything” to injure it.

This is why your back might feel tighter at the end of a long day or during busier, more stressful seasons.

🧘‍♀️ The goal isn’t to force your body to relax. It’s to give it the right input so it can.

Small moments of slowing your breath, softening your body, and reconnecting to yourself can start to shift things more than you might expect.
