Sue Johnson, founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy died yesterday. She taught 10s of thousands of therapists who have helped hundreds of thousands of couples to find love again.

You know that vicious cycle where one of you asks for more help, support, engagement, s*x, or sharing and seemly your partner doesn't respond, so you get mad, maybe critical which results in your partner shutting down further and you feel abandoned? Or maybe you are just a bit preoccupied and feel the relationship is a bit claustrophobic so you take a little space and ironically your partner gets more demanding and seems to crowd you further? So you pull away from all that intensity and you get this terrible message that you're failing... yeah that cycle.

Well, Sue taught people how to break the cycle so that they could find connection again, feel secure and feel love. She taught the "how-to's" about intimacy... not just that we should be close, that we should love, that we should forgive, but the actual steps.

All of it is done through empathy, imagining the good reasons in our defenses, the way we learned to survive that made sense long ago but triggers our partners now.

Sue was about love. She unfailingly believed people could find love again. You change couples and families; you change children. You change children; you change the world. Sue changed the world for love.

She changed me, my practice, my parenting, and my partnership.
