Quality of Mind Activities with a Purpose! In-Home Cognitive Engagement for Seniors Young & Old

07/10/2024

Quality of Mind is back!

Due to an injury I sustained in February, I was on hiatus while I healed and went through physical therapy
I was virtual during this time but am now resuming in-person sessions as well as presentations!

I had the pleasure of presenting today at The DeCorso Senior Center in New Providence, NJ as part of my return.
I had a fantastic time and enjoyed meeting all the wonderful people there, both staff and members

Thank you again to DeCorso for having me out!

With January in the rearview and still some cold months ahead, I have started my yearly effort to force bulbs inside.

It is the process of tricking spring bulbs to bloom early. I like to use paper-whites and amaryllis bulbs as they do not require chilling in the fridge first.
These bulbs can be ordered or you can find them in your local hardware store like Home Depot.

I have attached two links that explain the process and care.
This is great for people who might be laid up at home, in a care facility or just for those who, like myself and so many others, love to garden and want to be able to add some color and nature indoors

To all my clients , friends, seniors and fellow volunteers, Please be extremely careful out there. The amount of ice seen and unseen is tremendous! On my lunch-break I took my dogs for a walk ,the majority of houses sidewalks, paths and driveways are ice covered. If you do not have to go out do not. if you are unable to shovel or de-ice on your own reach out to someone who can possibly do it for you. I walked on the grass side between the street and sidewalk, it was awkward but, more secure I felt. Stay safe and stay warm!

βœ¨β„οΈ Having a get-together for the Holidays? β„οΈβœ¨

Here is a little game that everyone can help create and take part in. All you need to do is as you reach out to those attending, add a little request:

Have each person come up with trivia question(s) and answer(s) that have to do with the holiday and bring them to the party.

Make some of them easy and some challenging to make it interesting. Make sure to keep your trivia questions to yourself!
(If you have a smaller group, add some more questions per person, ex. 10 each. If you have a larger group decrease the questions per person, ex. 5 each. This way it is not a burden to the guest)

NOTE: You want your questions to be able to be answered but, challenging enough to have to work for it in friendly competition.

The host should pick 2 speakers who will take turns reading the questions aloud. The remaining audience members will guess the answers!

This game is a great way to start the party off with an icebreaker for relatives who have not seen each other in a long time, newcomers to the family or after dinner while eating dessert.
This gives your guest a chance to learn something new, work on their memory and also reminisce.

Keeping yourself or a loved one engaged and having a feeling of purpose is incredibly important for our self-esteem, confidence, and dignity.
It is especially important during this time of year, where there are so many opportunities to lend a hand in preparing meals, wrapping presents, decorating, and many more. An easy task that is fun and contributes to the festivities of any holiday or event is wreath decorating.

All you need is:
Wreath faux or fresh
Shatterproof ornaments
Ribbon for bow (Or you can purchase a premade bow)
Low temp glue gun
Glue sticks
*And florist wire if needed for hanging

Arrange the ornaments, bow, and ribbon in a multitude of ways first to see how you like it before you glue them in place.
If you are unable to put it together yourself, you can be the decorating supervisor! Choose the colors and arrangement style with the help of another gluing it in place. And that's it!
Your friends and family will love making this keepsake as well as displaying it for all to enjoy!
