This month, our members will be wearing shirts to support Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. In the U.S., about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. It is so important to spread awareness, and emphasize the importance in self-tests and screenings.

🙏❤️ A huge thank you to the Westfield Diner and Redeemer Lutheran Church, Westfield, NJ for hosting a fundraiser this past week in support of the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad!

We are so grateful for the generosity of our community and for everyone who came out to support our mission of providing free emergency medical services to Westfield.

Pictured here are four of our past squad presidents - Jon Delano, Art Cooke, Dan Sullivan, and Reid Edles - enjoying a meal together at the diner. Together, these four have dedicated approximately 120 years of volunteer service to the Squad! 🚑🙌

We are incredibly proud of our past, present, and future members, and so thankful to the Westfield community for standing by us every step of the way.

🚒🐾 The Town of Westfield, NJ Fire Department came to the rescue outside Squad President Callie Campbell’s house today after a tiny kitten became trapped in a sewer.

With quick thinking, patience, and teamwork, the Tour 1 firefighters safely brought the kitten out - and even let Callie lend a hand in the effort. ❤️

The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is so grateful to our incredible Fire Department for their excellent work and dedication. Our community is lucky to have such amazing first responders! 🙌🐱

Statement from the Executive Board of the WVRS
The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad takes great pride in being a volunteer organization that has served this community for more than 70 years without ever sending a bill to a patient. Our members - your neighbors - respond to emergencies at all hours, in all conditions, with professionalism and compassion. We do this because we love Westfield.
We wish to clarify that WVRS does not endorse or oppose any candidate for elected office. Any comments or opinions expressed by individual members, including officers, are made in their personal capacity and do not reflect the official position of the Rescue Squad. Our focus remains where it has always been - on delivering the highest level of emergency care and volunteer service to the residents of Westfield. We thank the community for its continued trust and support.
To be clear: we are committed to complete transparency when it comes to our funding, including the possibility of any funding that may come from the town of Westfield as laid out by state law. We currently rely 100% on donations, but we are open to financial support coming from the town of Westfield. New Jersey state law lays out how counties and municipalities can contribute funding to their volunteer rescue squads, and we are committed to following the law to the letter. Many neighboring towns already provide funding to their volunteer EMS agencies. See N.J. R.S.40:5-2 for details.
We have invited all current town Council members - and candidates running for council - to visit the Rescue Squad to learn about our work. The Rescue Squad has worked hard this year to strengthen operations, increase training, improve coverage, and deepen collaboration with the police and fire departments. At a time when volunteerism is down across the country, it is especially disappointing to see anyone’s service and dedication to this town questioned. We should be fostering an environment that encourages people to volunteer, not fear doing so. Our door is always open to anyone who wishes to understand how the Squad operates, how we are funded, and how we serve our residents.
We thank everyone for their continued support.

The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is proud to honor longtime member Kirk Fleming for achieving an extraordinary milestone: 40 years of volunteer service to the Squad and the Westfield community.
Since joining the Squad in 1985, Kirk has been the embodiment of professionalism, compassion, and dedication. Over the decades, he has responded to thousands of emergency calls, mentored countless EMTs, and left an immeasurable impact on the community he serves.
“Kirk keeps patient safety and care at the forefront of everything he does—and he never delivers anything less than excellence,” said EMT Yogen Patel, one of Kirk’s frequent partners. “Even in the most challenging and high-pressure situations, Kirk remains calm and composed, consistently delivering top-tier care. His steady composure, mentorship, and generosity have made me a better EMT and a better person.”
For Jon Delano, another longtime partner, Kirk is “a true renaissance man: EMT, paramedic, RN, actuarial professional, scoutmaster, author, EMS songwriter, CPR instructor, husband, father, and soon-to-be CPR app developer. He’s still as enthusiastic today as he was 40 years ago, continuing to educate himself and share his knowledge. He is the definition of a quiet professional.”
Veteran Squad member Art Cooke recalls that Kirk is the one partner he would always want on a difficult call. “The superlatives flow: knowledgeable, intelligent, capable, calm, caring,” Cooke said. “From delivering a three-month premature baby at home over Labor Day to teaching CPR to scouts and school staff, Kirk’s skill and dedication have always set him apart.”
Beyond his clinical expertise, Kirk has served as an officer, committee member, CPR instructor, and trusted resource for equipment and training improvements. He has given countless hours to the Boy Scouts, taught lifesaving skills to the public, and even found time to publish a novel, Ursa Maximus.
“Kirk represents the very best of volunteer EMS,” said Callie Campbell, President of the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad. “His legacy is one of service, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others. We are honored to have him as part of our family.”
