Situated at the foot of the picturesque Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, we are a 90-unit facility set back in a quiet neighborhood. Westfield is a tight-knit community in which many of our residents are active members. The Arbors participates in Westfield’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, joins local veterans in their yearly flagpole ceremony and hosts a barbeque in their honor. We also host the Westfield Camera Club’s monthly meetings and are active members of the Chamber of Commerce. Many of our residents are politically active and we are proud to have State Rep John Velis join our coffee hour on a regular basis. We take food very seriously at The Arbors, using the freshest ingredients available. Our dining room is served restaurant style, all baked goods are homemade and our residents’ food is made to order. 2015 marked our 10-year anniversary and we are looking forward to serving the wonderful city of Westfield for many more. The Arbors at Westfield serves the communities of Westfield, West Springfield, Southwick, Agawam, Southampton, Montgomery, Russell, Huntington, Suffield, CT and the surrounding area. About a year ago, Bill Plasse, President of Westfield On Weekends invited one of our “over 90” residents to have his photo taken by photographer Bill Hughes. Well last night one of our Directors was dining at Tribeca and noticed his picture on the wall! Hal D. is famous! What a handsome man at 93 years young!

Our trip to Delaney’s Market was a wonderful treat for our residents today!
Everyone enjoyed shopping and sampling some delicious bites — including chicken piccata, soda raisin bread, and a sweet white wine.
Smiles, good food, and great company made for a perfect outing!

Talking with your Loved One About Assisted Living

If you’re a spouse or family member of a loved one in need of help with daily activities, you’re probably wondering how to go about bringing up the idea of assisted living.
Here are some suggestions for having “The Talk” with your loved one.
1. Talking with a loved one about moving to an assisted living community may be met with denial, defensiveness and anger. Avoid responding defensively or punitively to your loves one’s emotions. Let your loved one know that they still have control and input on any decision.

2. If possible, introduce the idea to your loved one gradually. Provide them with brochures and resources that they can review privately. Be patient with the process and don’t push or make demands.

3. Have empathy for the fact that your loved one leaving their long-time home is a huge decision tied with the fear of losing independence. Reassure your loved one that you will be there for them with support and guidance.

4. With your loved one’s permission, ask a family friend, minister or care manager to participate in the discussion.

5. Discuss the safety aspects and other benefits of assisted living, such as opportunities to socialize and relief from yard work, housecleaning and cooking duties. Offer to visit assisted living communities with your loved one and ask for their input about what they would like in a senior community.
