In this episode of the NPIAP Podcast, Dr. Joyce Black sits down with NPIAP President, Dave Brienza, PhD, to unpack the evolving science behind medical support surfaces.

They discuss why standardizing terminology and performance metrics is essential for preventing pressure injuries, how test results can be misinterpreted, and the role of patient risk profiles in choosing the right surface. The conversation highlights the complexity of support‑surface selection and the ongoing need for clear standards to guide clinical decision‑making.

Join us as we highlight our valued Corporate Advisory Council Members!

This month we are excited to feature WoundVision.

With mandatory reporting under the CMS Hospital Harm – Pressure Injury eCQM on the horizon, WoundVision is helping hospitals stay ahead of the curve by advancing pressure injury prevention — building system-wide prevention strategies, strengthening POA documentation, and delivering equitable assessment across all skin tones. With adoption from leading health systems, hospitals are scaling Scout across their nursing workflows to set a new standard for pressure injury prevention and documentation.

WoundVision’s flagship solution, the Scout®, combines long-wave infrared thermography (LWIT) and photographic imaging into a single modality. This gives trained healthcare professionals the ability to overcome the subjectivity of visual inspection with objective, quantitative, physiological documentation, regardless of skin pigmentation. And by integrating seamlessly with the EMR, it fits directly into existing clinical workflows without disruption.

Trusted by hospitals of all shapes and sizes — including Magnet hospitals, academic medical centers, and level I trauma centers — WoundVision is backed by a 99% customer retention rate, integrations with Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Allscripts, and Vista, and a body of supporting evidence that consists of 100+ international evidence-based guideline statements, peer-reviewed publications, and independent quality improvement projects. Hospitals implementing Scout technology at enterprise scale are minimizing variation in care, costs, and outcomes, protecting revenue from non-reimbursement and penalties, and advancing health equity by delivering consistent, reliable assessments across all skin tones.

NPIAP

The National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) is an independent not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to the prevention and management of pressure injuries. Formed in 1986, the NPIAP Board of Directors is composed of leading experts from different health care disciplines— all of whom share a commitment to the prevention and management of pressure injuries. The NPIAP serves as a resource to health care professionals, government, the public, and health care agencies; and welcomes and encourages the participation of those interested in pressure injury issues through utilization of NPIAP educational materials, participation at national conferences, and support of efforts in public policy, education and research.

The NPIAP, assisted by multiple corporations and organizations, has become an internationally recognized entity. The collaboration of professionals, corporations, and governmental agencies offers a unique model for addressing major healthcare issues. The European Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and the Japanese Society of Pressure Ulcers have adapted the NPIAP model in establishing their organizations.
