Prepare for Surgery with Hypnosis and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
By Eugene M. Hamilton, LMT, certified hypnotherapist
When a person is preparing for surgery, there can be a tremendous amount of anxiety connected to not having control over and uncertainty about how things will turn out. By relaxing the mind, calming emotions, and creating a pattern of positive thoughts through hypnosis and EFT, one may be able to reduce anxiety and have more available energy to heal more quickly from whatever the procedure may be.
As defined by the Cleveland Clinic, “Hypnosis, also called hypnotherapy, is a state of deep relaxation and focused concentration. It’s a type of mind-body medicine.” One explanation for how hypnosis works is that it helps to temporarily alter the brain wave pattern from a beta wave pattern where you are operating from your frontal cortex down to an alpha wave pattern where you’re starting to relax, and your attention is shifting to a more receptive state, followed by a theta wave pattern where the brain is connected to both the subconscious and conscious aspects of itself. This is similar to when a person is meditating or daydreaming.
According to Kaiser Permanente, “(EFT) is a method some people use to help manage emotions and troubling thoughts. “ EFT uses a pattern of tapping on your acupressure points to move the energy through the body so it’s not to trigger the fight or flight response. During the tapping, verbalization of one’s worries and fears are used either by a practitioner or one self in order to change the perception you have about a given circumstance or events. A consistent practice of this technique can help a person feel more relaxed, and to reinforce any of the reconditioning of thought patterns that is achieved through the hypnotic process.
In the same way a computer or cell phone receives an update to help clear out the glitches and improve the processing capacity, so does working with thoughts and patterns that no longer serve one’s best interest. By putting one’s attention on the resources and capacities experience through life in a positive framework, the patient can have a more relaxed perspective of what they’re preparing to experience and help themselves to heal faster from surgery.
