When working with children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), I always start with what excites them.

Pro Tip: Gather a list of the child’s ‘favorites’ from their caretaker to create motivating, engaging activities that are meaningful and fun.

- Does your child love dinosaurs? 🦕 🦖
- Obsessed with ice cream? 🍦
- Can’t get enough of their puppy? 🐾

These interests can serve as a guide in selecting which sound movements to practice sequencing and coarticulating. Why? Because when therapy is meaningful and fun, progress happens faster - and it sticks!

Carrier phrases are simple, repetitive phrases used in early intervention to support language development. They provide a consistent framework, helping children focus on key words and concepts within a familiar structure.

Once your child has mastered communicating at the single word level and/or is ready to advance to longer sentences, try modeling these carrier phrases!

Perceiving bodily states provides crucial information to a person about their internal condition, such as recognizing feelings of tiredness, anxiety, or hunger.

This awareness helps individuals understand their physical and emotional needs, prompting them to take appropriate actions.

For example, recognizing the sensation of heavy eyes may signal the need for rest, sweaty hands might indicate anxiety that could be managed through deep breathing exercises, and a grumbling stomach suggests the need for food.

By accurately perceiving these bodily cues, individuals can implement strategies to address their needs, enhancing their ability to self-regulate and maintain overall well-being.

Need some quick strategies for boosting early language?!

If you notice your child/client struggling to initiate communication on their own, these tips are super helpful. They’re designed to be highly motivating and meaningful for the child.

Important note: I don’t withhold an item if they don’t imitate a model/prompt. My goal is for language therapy to feel fun, safe, and empowering - NOT like “work” or discouraging. If you have concerns about your child’s language, I recommend consulting with an SLP!

There’s plenty more language strategies out there for early intervention - I just wanted to share a few of them in an easy to digest format. Hope this helps!
