“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” — Aristotle
Greek philosopher Aristotle laid the foundation for countless fields—from ethics and logic to biology and politics. His insights on self-awareness continue to guide thinkers, leaders, and seekers thousands of years later. This timeless reminder invites us to turn inward, reflect deeply, and cultivate a life rooted in understanding.

“When we do the best that we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.”

-Helen Keller (1914)
Excellence is difficult to measure. In the Olympics there is a judging system of points and scores to compare the athlete’s performances. But when it comes to our day to day lives, excellence for each one of us is doing the best that we can do. We know when we’re slacking off. We know when we can do better. We’re the only ones who can make that judgment accurately. And when we do strive for excellence, when we put ourselves out there and really give it our all, we know it, we can feel it. = Lissa Coffey

“Excellence is not an act but a habit. The things you do the most are the things you will do best.”

-Marva Collins (1987)
It would be easy if talent was all it took for us to achieve excellence. But it doesn’t work that way. On “American Idol” there are many singers with talent. But the ones who have the most experience really stand out. The experience of singing for people over and over again hones their skills, and when the competition day comes, their excellence shows. We even see how week after week, each of the singers seems to get better. They’re in an environment where they are focusing their energies and spending their time to cultivating excellence.

“The secret of joy in work is contained in one word – excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.”

-Pearl S. Buck (1964)
When we enjoy doing something, we put our heart into it, and it shows. What we enjoy doing, we do well, we can’t help it. And by the same token, what we do well brings us joy! We are rewarded for a job well done by feeling good about it.

“Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.”

-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826)
The more popular version of this saying is: “You are what you eat.” That’s easy to understand in terms of food. We know what’s good for our bodies. But think of what we eat in terms of what we consume in the media, and the marketplace, too. Are we buying and using products that are good for ourselves and the environment? Are we reading, watching shows, and expressing ourselves in ways that are beneficial to humanity? Food for thought!

“Food for all is a necessity. Food should not be a merchandise, to be bought and sold as jewels are bought and sold by those who have the money to buy. Food is a human necessity, like water and air, and it should be as available.”

-Pearl S. Buck, 1967
Food is probably the most basic of human needs. It’s one way that we take care of each other. I think of when I would go over to my grandmother’s house. She loved to feed me! Somehow it made her feel good to see me eat. There is a website now that we can visit, and just by “clicking” food is provided to people who need it most. It doesn’t cost us anything because it is advertiser sponsored. This is just one example of how people are coming together to help alleviate the hunger problem in the world.
