Here are **10 simple, effective things you can do when you feel activated** (anxious, overwhelmed, triggered) to help your nervous system settle and get grounded again:
1. **Name 5–4–3–2–1**
* Name **5 things you see**
* **4 things you feel**
* **3 things you hear**
* **2 things you smell**
* **1 thing you taste**
This pulls your attention out of your head and into the present moment.
2. **Slow your exhale**
* Inhale for **4**
* Exhale for **6–8**
Longer exhales tell your body it’s safe.
3. **Put your feet on the floor**
* Press your feet firmly into the ground.
* Imagine roots growing from them into the earth.
4. **Temperature reset**
* Hold something cold (ice, cold can, cold water on wrists).
* Or splash cool water on your face.
5. **Orient to the room**
* Slowly look around and name where you are, the date, and that you’re safe right now.
6. **Move your body gently**
* Stretch, shake out your hands, roll your shoulders, or take a short walk.
* Even 30 seconds helps release stored activation.
7. **Self-talk for safety**
* Say (out loud if you can):
*“I’m safe right now. This will pass. My body is responding, not failing.”*
8. **Engage your senses**
* Smell something grounding (coffee, essential oil).
* Wrap yourself in a blanket.
* Hold a textured object.
9. **Humming or vocalizing**
* Hum, sigh, or gently sing.
* This stimulates the vagus nerve and calms the nervous system.
10. **Micro-connection**
* Text someone safe.
* Sit near a pet.
* Even remembering someone supportive can reduce activation.
