A child once destined to die from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1 has defied the odds thanks to prenatal medicine. Doctors administered risdiplam during the last six weeks of pregnancy, boosting crucial SMN protein levels before birth. Today, the nearly three-year-old shows no signs of disease.

SMA type 1 is a devastating genetic condition that robs infants of muscle control, often leading to death before age three. By delivering therapy while the baby was still in the womb, researchers intervened at the most critical window protecting motor neurons before irreversible damage could occur.
