Last Friday, we had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Deanna Dow into our space for a 3-hour, deeply thoughtful training with our clinical team.

Dr. Dow spent the morning with us sharing best practices for supporting youth and young adults on the autism spectrum across our Intensive Outpatient Programs, group therapy, and day-to-day clinical work. The conversation was practical, nuanced, and grounding — exactly the kind of learning that strengthens care from the inside out.

Together, we:
• Consulted on real clinical cases
• Re-examined how we structure and facilitate groups
• Thought carefully about how we define and measure treatment goals
• Explored ways to better support social connection
• Even looked at how our physical space can be more supportive for neurodivergent clients

Dr. Dow is the founder of , a Los Angeles–based practice offering comprehensive psychological testing, individual therapy, occupational therapy, medication management, breathwork, yoga, and support groups — all through a neurodiversity-affirming lens.

We’re still processing everything we learned — in the best way.
Thank you, Dr. Dow, for your generosity, expertise, and for spending time with our team here in Westlake Village. We’re grateful to keep learning how to do this work more thoughtfully and more inclusively.

Staff Spotlight: Terry Carroll 💙

Family Therapist & Parent Educator
Terry Carroll has been part of Engage’s Intensive Outpatient Programs for many years, and her impact on the families we serve is undeniable.

What Makes Terry Special
Terry is a force - in the best possible way. She brings deep knowledge and training in working with families and parents, combined with a straightforward personality that isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said. Some therapists dance around the hard stuff. Terry doesn’t. She shows up with honesty, clarity, and a genuine commitment to helping families move forward.

Her background includes equine-assisted therapy and running her own practice, experiences that have shaped how she approaches the work. She understands that healing happens in different ways for different families, and she’s not afraid to meet people exactly where they are.

Always Learning, Always Growing
One of the things we admire most about Terry? Her commitment to expanding her craft. She’s constantly seeking new ways to help more families. Recently, she shadowed Peggy Matson to learn how to facilitate our Reflective Parenting Program (RPP) classes.

RPP is a therapeutic parenting program that helps parents understand their children’s emotional world and strengthen their parent-child relationship. It’s powerful work, and Terry’s dedication to learning it shows how seriously she takes serving families.

Why Families Trust Her
Terry has been a long-standing part of our programs because families respond to her approach. They appreciate her directness. They trust her expertise. And they know she’s not just showing up to do a job - she’s showing up because she genuinely cares about helping them build healthier, stronger family connections.
Terry, thank you for your years of dedication to this work and to the families at Engage. Your impact is felt every single day. 💙

LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults deserve mental health support that is safe, affirming, and grounded in real care.

At Engage, our LGBTQIA+ support groups are clinician-led spaces where individuals don’t have to explain who they are to belong.

These groups are built around:
• Emotional safety and regulation
• Identity-affirming support
• Thoughtful, evidence-based care
• A deep respect for each person’s lived experience

Belonging isn’t extra.
It’s part of the treatment.

If you’re looking for support in a space designed with care and intention, we’re here.

Belonging doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s built into the system.

This week on Look for the Helpers, we talked about empathy as something that’s learned, practiced, and designed into environments, not just felt in moments.

That idea mirrors our work at Engage Therapy and Engage Treatment every day.

When systems aren’t inclusive, people internalize failure.
When they are, regulation improves, reflection deepens, and growth becomes possible.

This is why our programs focus on:
• Emotional safety before performance
• Neuro-inclusive treatment structures
• Reflective parenting that builds mentalizing
• Identity-affirming spaces, including LGBTQIA+ support groups

Empathy isn’t soft.
Belonging matters.
That’s the work.

They told him not to feel.
That became his superpower.

In this clip from Look for the Helpers, Ajit Dodani shares how being an empath, once discouraged, became the foundation of his work in leadership, empathy, and building systems where people actually belong.

Empathy isn’t soft.
It’s learned.
And it changes how humans function inside systems.

🎙 New podcast episode is live.

Empathy is often misunderstood as softness.
In reality, it’s one of the most powerful skills we have for building trust, regulation, and belonging — in families, schools, workplaces, and communities.

In today’s episode of Look for the Helpers, Dr. Blake Brisbois sits down with Ajit Dodani, a former CFO turned empathy strategist, to explore:
• Why empathy is a learned skill
• How neuro-inclusion changes systems
• What emotionally unsafe environments cost us
• And why belonging isn’t optional for growth

This conversation mirrors what we see every day at Engage.

When people feel safe, they regulate better.
When they feel understood, they grow.

Fear often keeps us quiet.
In schools, in families, in hard conversations.

In Episode 2 of the Look for the Helpers podcast, our clinical director Robert Scholz, LMFT, talks about threat assessment, school safety, and why real safety is built through connection, not panic.

Sometimes we avoid asking the question because we’re afraid of the answer.
But when we don’t ask, we miss the chance to intervene early, stay curious, and keep kids connected to care.

At Engage, this lens shapes everything we do—from how we support parents in staying regulated, to how our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) helps teens and young adults move from isolation back into connection, accountability, and hope.

Safety isn’t just stopping a crisis.
It’s restoring a path forward.

we look for the helpers.

Staff Spotlight: Robert Scholz, LMFT 💙

Consultant, Mentor, & Episode 2 of “Look for the Helpers”
Robert Scholz holds a special place in the story of Engage Therapy. Back in 2016, Robert was the Clinical Director who hired Blake and Adelina to work at what was then a previous version of Engage Recovery. That decision changed everything.

The Mentor Who Shaped Us
From day one, Robert’s calm, wise presence has been grounding and confidence-inspiring. He never shies away from hard conversations. He brings humility and curiosity to every interaction, making anyone in front of him feel heard, seen, and important.
Blake and Adelina will both tell you: working alongside Robert taught them what thoughtful clinical leadership looks like.

Why Robert Still Matters to Our Work
Robert’s extensive knowledge of suicidal and homicidal risk assessment and management isn’t just impressive - it’s essential to the work we do at Engage. In our Intensive Outpatient Programs, we work with vulnerable youth and families navigating serious mental health challenges. Risk assessment isn’t just a protocol; it’s about keeping people safe while they heal.
That’s why Robert remains part of our team as a trusted consultant. He keeps us sharp on best practices, updated on the latest in the field, and grounded in what matters most: the safety and wellbeing of the young people we serve.

Author, Speaker, Therapist, Leader
Robert is all of these things, and we have the utmost respect for his contributions to the mental health field. But more than that, he’s a close friend and someone whose wisdom continues to shape how we show up for our community.

Listen to Episode 2
We sat down with Robert for Episode 2 of “Look for the Helpers, a podcast by Engage Therapy.” The conversation is everything you’d expect from Robert - thoughtful, grounded, and full of insight. Link in bio to listen.
Robert, thank you for believing in us, teaching us, and continuing to guide our work. We’re grateful for you. 💙

Some of the most important stories never make the news.

In this week’s episode of Look for the Helpers, we’re joined by longtime friend and colleague Robert Scholz, LMFT.
In this clip, Robert reflects on something we don’t talk about nearly enough.

The moments when harm is prevented.
When community members notice.
When families speak up.
When professionals step in early and someone gets the support they need.

These stories don’t trend.
But they matter deeply.

Robert has worn many hats over the years. Clinical director. College counseling leader. Author. Consultant. Therapist here in Westlake Village. And for us at Engage Therapy, he continues to support our team in the daily, complex work of su***de and homicide risk assessment.

This conversation is about prevention, responsibility, and remembering that there are far more successes than tragedies, even when we don’t see them.

01/12/2026

Our Intensive Outpatient Program supports preteens, teens, and young adults who need more structure, consistency, and clinical support than a single weekly session can provide — while still staying connected to home, school, and family.

IOP can be helpful when a young person is:
• feeling stuck despite ongoing therapy
• struggling with emotional regulation or anxiety
• having difficulty functioning at school or home
• needing more frequent, coordinated care

Our programs are clinician-led, developmentally informed, and rooted in safety, connection, and skill-building that translates to daily life.

If you’re wondering whether IOP might be the right next step, our team is always available to talk through options and answer questions.

Serving youth and families throughout the Conejo Valley, including Westlake Village and Agoura Hills.

Mindful Beginnings is an extension of our Reflective Parenting work, with your child present.

Designed for children from walking age to 4 years old and their caregivers, this group offers a supported space to practice regulation, connection, and confidence together.

Parents and children attend as a dyad, allowing for:
• real-time feedback and guidance
• gentle exposure to new experiences
• group support from peers
• care from two licensed clinicians

Rather than talking about challenges, Mindful Beginnings creates space to experience support in the moment.

Our next cohort begins Tuesday.

If this feels like the right next step for your family, we encourage you to reach out soon so there is time to connect and ask questions.
