Stop being so precious about your plants, especially if they look like crap! I mean, what are you hanging on to? Give them a chop. Start them over.

Plants are hardy and want to live so when you chop them the top cut can always become a baby version of the original and the bottom cut can become an experiment.

Pruning is so fun. I’m not kidding.

My goal in life is to one day have almost zero succulents. Until then, I’ll torture myself by continually propagating and making more.

Anyone else dislike succulents or is it just me?

Drought plants are the ones most susceptible to dry rot because they’re easy to forget about. Sansevieria, ZZ and dracaena are the ones I see most often.

Once dry rot sets in you’re likely to lose the plant unless you catch it early, which is more likely by chance than when you see actual symptoms.

My advice - and this goes against everything I say about watering - water these plants on a schedule. For snakes and ZZ, water once a month (as long as the soil is DRY) for Dracaena water every 3-4 weeks (as long as the soil is about 75% dry)

As much drought as these plants will take, THEY DO NEED WATER 💧

Your plants need to have their soil saturated in order to build strong roots and it’s simple as that.

Hydrophobic soil is common with plants that are infrequently watered, like snake plants, succulents, cacti and ZZ’s. As well as plants that have been neglected and dried out completely.

Signs the soil is hydrophobic are that the water runs directly through the soil, the pot doesn’t gain weight from watering and if you have clear pots, you can see pockets of dry soil.

Bottom watering is a great way to get your soil to absorb the water you’re giving your plants!

I keep telling myself to trust the process here but this baby is struggling. Sometimes with root rot the plant’s tissues are too damaged to save, sometimes they’ve gotten a bacterial or fungal infection that continues to spread.

I’m staying on top of this cutting and working to get the roots to take hold. I’m not giving up hope.

Follow along for the updates and please cross your fingers, say your prayers, send the healing vibes - I really want to return a healthy jade back to by client.

Here’s the problem with taking a photo of your plant to a garden center for help…

Often, you aren’t dealing with an expert - lots of garden center employees are not plant experts and don’t know all the questions to ask. They see some photos and make assumptions. It’s not their fault, and I’m sure they’re doing the best they can. But it’s just not ideal.

When I come to care for your plant I’m able to get ALL THE INFORMATION.

I can see the light of the room where your plant lives.
I fully inspect your plant for pests and infection.
I can feel the soil and pull the plant from the pot to check the roots.

You’re able to get the exact care your plant needs when I come to do the work.

I am able to make sure the plant is potted into the correct size pot, recommend placement for best light or adding grow lights when the natural light just isn’t enough.

I can trim a plant down to ensure it grows strong and propagate the cuttings so you don’t lose any of the growth it’s taken years to create.

There is nothing wrong with garden centers - they’re wonderful places… but if you want your houseplants to get the best care possible, you need me!! Not just advice.

January booking is open and I’d love to come care for your houseplants!
