Too often, we only look at failing and succeeding β€” we ignore the in between.

For instance, just because you were anxious today doesn't mean you failed. Just because you engaged in a compulsion doesn't mean you failed. If there's an adjustment to make, great! If not, we look at it as an opportunity to practice tolerating those uncomfortable anxious thoughts and feelings.

TRUTH!

Treating certainty as something to be achieved, rather than a feeling to be experienced, keeps people stuck. I get it.

Not knowing something feels really uncomfortable, drive worry and make us act out of fear. The reality is that life is inherently uncertain β€” the better you get at feeling it, the better you'll be at experiencing it.

5 Ways We Look for Certainty:

1. Seek reassurance by asking others, often repeatedly
2. Search the internet over and over
3. Ruminate about past events
4. Resist the feeling of uncertainty
5. Stop progressing, choosing instead to stay stuck

Thoughts come and go, come and go. Let your thoughts just be what they are β€” thoughts.

It's like that experiment: for the next 5 minutes, don't think of a pink elephant. What happens? All you can think of is a pink elephant. Even when you stop thinking of it, you're checking back to see if you're thinking of it.

It's better to think what you think, remembering that most thoughts don't require an active response. It sounds so easy, but it's not. It's what we work on together.
