Get ready for spring! Sun protection ( UVA, UVB, visible light) is important whether you have melasma, want to slow down skin aging or prevent skin cancers or all of the above. Many of us are caught off guard until we notice the reappearance of melasma and sun spots. Stay a step ahead and be prepared by focusing on sun protection as we warm up to spring. Sunscreen is the single best topical for the skin. Those with melasma and those who’ve had laser resurfacing are especially sun sensitive. As little as 10 min of sun exposure can make melasma worsen. An interesting fact about laser hair removal- Areas like the underarm and bikini have coarse dark hair growth that absorbs laser energy better and respond better but you feel the treatment a little more. You may prefer to apply a numbing cream prior to treatment. Finer lighter hair does not absorb as much energy and you don’t feel it as much, may need more treatments or not respond at all / as well. Check out these before and after pics of leg veins Dr Diwan treated by sclerotherapy in our office. This is the time to check what’s visible when you’re in shorts or a swimsuit. If you spot these there’s still time to have your treatments. Take advantage of the colder months because it’s best not to have a tan when you’re being treated, it’s easier to wear post-treatment compression hose when it’s cooler, and the tiny bruises at the injection sites are easily hidden by long pants or skirts. FAQ re: winter skin dryness. Dryness makes the skin look dull, accentuates wrinkles and may cause itching and inflammation. The change in weather means a change in skin care for many of us. Help keep your skin well hydrated and looking its best by
• drinking plenty of water
• using a humidifier
• using a gentle cleanser (ZO gentle cleanser, Revision gentle foaming cleanser or Dove)
• moisturizing with a glycerin and hyaluronic acid ( Skin Medica HA5 Collagen, Revision Hydrating serum, Skinceuticals triple lipid, La Roche Posay Triple Repair moisturizer)
• reduce water loss from your skin by reducing exfoliation ( less frequent Retin A, AHA, BHA products and peels).
