One of the most asked questions is, “if I’m in labor, when do I call my doula?”
Every doula is different and every client is different, so hopefully this is something you’ve discussed during your birthing plan! BUT, some people still don’t feel they know when the right time is. We can’t speak for every doula in the world, but here’s how we work:
Generally, we want to know when you think you’re in labor so we can prepare. If it’s during the day, call or text us!
If it’s 3am, still call or text us!
We would rather have false alarms than get a phone call when you’re at 10cm and now we’re racing with baby to see which one of us arrives first!
We want to make sure we’re there for you every step of the way and that means we need to know if you might be in labor, so when it comes to Doulas of Carroll County, please don’t feel scared or guilty about calling us. We’re a team and we’ve got your back! ✨

Bodily autonomy and medical care are rights that every single human should have, but the reality is that this is NOT the case for many POC and LGBTQIA+ people.
A doula can provide additional support and help advocate for safe and fair birthing in situations that aren’t safe and fair to begin with.
The source article we used has a wealth of information and statistics and we encourage you to read it.
We also want to ask you to share any and all resources - anywhere in your communities that assist in combating bias and discrimination in medicine - in the comments below. ✨

Toning your b***y is one reason to do squats, but labor is another!
Many hospital beds come equipped with a “squat bar”. This magical attachment means that you can squat while having the support of the bar to lean on!
Squatting during labor utilizes this super cool scientific thing called gravity. Gravity makes things go down, which means baby will also go down! Squatting helps to widen your pelvis opening, and in turn, encourages baby to get into the best position to get ready for birth.✨

Some great tips from .nurse.mama for collecting colostrum ✨
Posted • .nurse.mama Colostrum is affectionately known as liquid gold. I get asked all the time about collecting it during pregnancy. Here's the thing, you don't have to, but it also won't hurt to have some on hand.

🤰🏼Hey Mama, Guess what? Labor Nurse Mama Calm Labor Confident Birth Class is open for new students, see link in Bio for more info. ⭐️⭐️

If you are leaking colostrum while pregnant, go ahead and collect it. If you are not leaking and don't see it yet, then don’t worry. It will come in time!

Do not try to express it before 37 weeks. Deal?

As far as what to collect it in, I won't lie, I am slightly obsessed with the Colostrum collector set. They have 2 sizes of lids to collect into and they come with labels for moments.

See my post from yesterday for more instructions on collecting colostrum during pregnancy.

From conception to birth, everyone’s pregnancy experience is so vastly different. The one thing that everyone can probably agree on is that they have (hopefully!) at least one favourite thing about their journey! Perhaps is was that all of a sudden you craved vegetables and felt great for healthy eating, maybe it was the way your hair grew thick and your skin was glowing, or maybe that you never felt alone?
What was your favourite thing about being pregnant? ✨

Birthing balls are the stuff of magic! They can relieve back pain, pressure in the spine, and help the pelvis muscles open to allow baby to descend into the pelvis to get ready for birth!
Have you used a birthing ball before? Drop a comment below and let us know your thoughts! ✨

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with a good cry! 😂✨

But real talk, it’s normal to feel this way during labor, and it doesn’t mean you’re failing! It’s simply the point in labor where we must confront our fears because we come face to face with them.

Do you TRULY trust your body?

Do you REALLY believe that you were made for this?

Do you KNOW, deep down beyond the knee-jerk fight or flight response to say “I can’t do this,” that you CAN?

So what can you do to be ready for this and get past it?

Prepare mentally. I’ll preach over and over and over that mindset is the most important component of labor ‘till the day I die. In my opinion, the best things you can do to instill that confidence is to hear as many birth stories as possible, and educate yourself on whatever specific topics you have fear around.

In a world where we’ve been taught to fear birth, confidence in it doesn’t always come naturally because we have to first unlearn what we’ve been told. Maybe you won’t reach the level of confidence you need for a freebirth right away, but it’s so important to be committed to the process of learning and growing.

So, feel those feelings. Lean into the vulnerability of labor and surrender to the lack of control you have over it, feel the difficult feelings, cry about it if you have to. Then boss up and keep reminding yourself of what you know - that you were designed to give birth, and you can do hard things. 🤍
