Zach and I were having a discussion this morning, and he asked why it doesn't feel as good to massage yourself, as it does when someone else gives you a massage? I've had clients in the past ask too. So I decided to share the answer with you as well.
✨️The Explanation: "The Brain's Secret Filter"
"Imagine your brain is like a very busy air traffic controller. When someone else massages you, it’s a surprise visit! Your brain pays close attention to every touch, feeling every bit of pressure and relaxation.
But when you massage yourself, your brain sends out two signals at once:
The 'Do It' Signal (Motor Nerves): 'Hands, go push on that shoulder!'
The 'Heads Up' Signal (Sensory Attenuation): 'Hey brain, I’m about to push on the shoulder, so don't worry about it.'
Because your brain already knows the touch is coming, it turns down the volume on that feeling so it can focus on other things. It’s like trying to surprise yourself with a 'Boo!'—it just doesn't work because you’re the one doing it!"
❤️The Fun Science Experiment: "The Tickle Test"
This experiment helps your son see exactly how the brain cancels out sensations it can predict.
Phase 1: The Self-Tickle
The Goal: Try to tickle the roof of your mouth with your own tongue.
The Result: It feels like nothing, right? Maybe a little smooth or bumpy, but definitely not "ticklish." Your brain (the Cerebellum) predicted the movement and "muted" the sensation.
Phase 2: The Two-Person Surprise
The Step: Ask your partner to close their eyes. Reach out and very lightly tickle their ribs or the palm of their hand.
The Result: They will jump or laugh!
♦️The Science: Because you moved and they didn't, their brain couldn't send the "Heads Up" signal. Their sensory nerves sent a "High Priority" message to their brain saying, "Something is happening! Pay attention!"
Phase 3: The "Magic" Cancellation (The Best Part)
The Step: Have your partner try to tickle themself again (it won't work). Now, tell them to put their hand on top of your hand while you try to tickle them.
The Result: The tickle sensation will be much weaker than in Phase 2!
♦️The Science: Because their hand is moving with yours, their brain gets a "hint" of where the hand is going. This helps their motor nerves predict the touch, even though you are the one doing the work!
